You can now play Diablo 4, currently still in beta. When you create a character, you have the option to make it a “hardcore character.” MeinMMO explains what that is – and why you as a newbie should stay away from it.
What is Hardcore? Hardcore gameplay has been part of Diablo for ages and is also possible in Diablo 4. If you play this mode, your character is no longer playable when it dies – a so-called “permadeath.” The opposite of this is Softcore.
The system is designed to give the achievements of players a bit more weight. For example, in Diablo 2, it was a big deal when the first player reached level 99 in Hardcore, as any mistake could mean the end.
Gameplay is also different, as hardcore players typically rely more on survival skills, whereas softcore players usually focus on pure damage output. Accordingly, the builds also differ.
You already have the opportunity in the currently running beta of Diablo 4 to make any character a hardcore character. Just check the “Hardcore” box when creating your character and entering a name.
Hardcore or Softcore – What’s the Difference
Is Hardcore worth it? That is a matter of taste, and if you like the thrill, you should definitely try Hardcore. However, in the beta, we strongly advise against playing Hardcore at the moment, even for veterans.
There are server issues at the start of the beta, and the whole purpose of the test is to test server load. Accordingly, there may be disconnects and lags, which can quickly kill your character.
Even if you know what you’re doing, it can happen that permanent death occurs without your own mistake. This would be particularly annoying if you have reached level 19 and are about to claim your cute reward.
What is Softcore like? If you play Softcore, you have no differences, other than that you can be revived upon death. Either by yourself at the next waypoint or in co-op by friends.
However, you have access to the same loot and the same abilities as a hardcore character. Especially if you are new to the ARPG genre or just starting with Diablo, it is advisable to first familiarize yourself with the classes.
