Diablo 4 has changed everything with Season 4 and delights fans and critics. MeinMMO editor and Diablo expert Benedict Grothaus has played countless hours since the release and has one major problem: he is as poor as a church mouse. Others feel the same – a completely new sensation in Diablo 4.
Since the release of Season 4, I have probably played about 15 hours now – including standing around in town and discovering new features to provide you with information. After all, there are numerous things in Season 4 that you probably haven’t discovered yet.
Most of the time, I was simply busy gaming. The new Hell Flood is simply excellent. Time flies incredibly fast when you can slay massive amounts of demons.
As… always in Diablo 4, I am playing a sorceress again. Yesterday, I unlocked World Tier 4 and adjusted my build for the first time after leveling. Or at least tried to, because in the middle of the adjustment, I suddenly ran out of gold.
This has never happened to me in this game, and I am not the only one. Season 4 is making me poor, a completely new feeling, and I am still not sure if I like it.
Everything Costs So Much Gold
Season 4 is unbelievably expensive. I noticed three things alone while leveling where I lost a lot of gold:
- Potions – The alchemist is really a rip-off, upgrading already costs a million at level 60. I couldn’t afford that several times.
- Legendaries – Imprinting affixes costs several hundred thousand with the occultist, depending on the item and level. Often you can’t do that at the beginning.
- Catch-Up Gear – There is a new chest with which you can create legendaries for second characters for horrendous amounts. But at least that’s optional.
And this is not where it ends. The endgame will be much more expensive. Here alone the last upgrade level for items costs 10 million gold. The previous upgrade levels are already in the millions as well.
Gold was already a problem in Diablo 4 at release Gold was a problem in Diablo 4. There were many systems that cost a lot of gold but only a few opportunities to get it. Since then, it has actually gotten significantly better.
The rewards from many contents have increased, and even even trivial, normal chests can be really worthwhile. But now I have no gold to speak of again.
A New Build Makes Me Absolutely Broke
Upon reaching level 50, I immediately adjusted my build. From the electric whip sorceress for leveling, I switched to a Blizzard build. Blizzard is one of the best builds according to Tier List in Season 4 and is a lot of fun.
Actually, building was quite easy. I can now easily collect legendary affixes while leveling and save them in the codex. I also had enough materials, always diligently dismantling everything. Still, it ended after 4 items: I was short on gold.
Imprinting new affixes on items sometimes costs several hundred thousand gold, which I simply did not have at that time. At the moment, I am walking around with a patchwork build until I have more money.
At least hardening costs no gold, just materials.
Players Ask Enthusiastically: “Do You Like This Too?”
I soon saw the discussion about gold on Reddit. Here, people celebrate that gold finally has value. Even streamers have a problem with it, and players say: That’s good, otherwise all the hardcore players would be finished already.
I’m not quite sure what to think of it.
Sure, in previous seasons gold hardly had any use. Except, one has rerolled a value so often that it went into the hundred million. Here, grinding for a new item with a better roll is more worthwhile than grinding for gold – in many cases.
Players are at least sharing tips: Whispers are said to be particularly rewarding. Here you can earn a few million per completion with a box. I should definitely do that more often. Or I just follow my own tips from the guide to gold farming in Diablo 4.
I’ve been at traders every now and then to see if they have something nice – but more than window shopping is not possible with my meager 30k in my pocket. However, a shopping tour could be worthwhile:
Although Season 4 has absurdly exponentially increasing gold costs, and even though especially the start of a season is always tough, I can’t remember ever being so poor. Not being able to afford potions has never happened before.
This is mainly because I lose myself in the Hell Flood, like probably many others. There is tons of loot, XP, and so much to do that time simply flies by.
