The undercity of Kurast is a timed dungeon with multiple phases, where you can level up and loot. Once you start your run, a timer begins to count down, which you can extend by completing monsters and events. In the undercity and throughout Sanctuary, you will find tributes that will help you farm even better. The undercity and the tributes are part of the Vessel of Hatred expansion.
What do I need tributes for? As soon as you start collecting tributes, you can use them in the undercity of Kurast to increase your chances of specific loot. Higher-quality tributes provide the best loot but also significantly increase the challenge of the undercity run.
The difficulty level at which you play also contributes to the quality of loot. Blizzard has removed the often-criticized world tiers in Diablo 4 and introduced torment levels:

Where can I find tributes? Basically, you can find tributes everywhere in Sanctuary. You will find different types of tributes that increase your chances of specific loot. The best places to find them are:
- Tributes that increase the chance of runes: Pit
- Tributes for Legendaries & Uniques: Chests from the Whispering Tree, World Bosses
- Tributes for Boss Materials: Bosses in the torment levels
- Tributes for Obduzit: Nightmare Dungeons, Hell Hordes
The tributes are collected in the inventory tab for dungeon keys. Since you only need them for the undercity, and there is a loot chest on site, you can also store them in your chest. After all, all those keys take up a lot of space in your inventory.
What types of tributes are there? There are magical, rare, legendary, and unique tributes. Tributes from the “rare” tier can only be used at the torment levels, while “magical” ones can be used before that. Depending on which tributes you use in the portal activator in the undercity in Nahantu, the less starting time you have. Additionally, health potions drop less frequently. However, you will receive better loot and higher chances for specific items.
Examples of tributes:
- Tribute of Mysticism (magical): Increases the chance for runes
- Tribute of Growth (magical): Increases XP
- Tribute of Refinement (rare): Increases the chance for Obduzit
- Tribute of Titans (rare): Increases the chance for boss materials
- Tribute of Harmony (rare): Increases the chance for runes
- Tribute of Ascendance (unique): Increases the chance for Uniques & Mythic Uniques
To use the high-quality tributes from the “rare” category, you must be on a torment level.
