In the latest stream, the developers of Diablo 4 talk about a new system in the upcoming action RPG: Crafting. Unlike before, you won’t just create items that soon become useless, but rather powerful items – at least within a certain range.
What kind of effects are these? In Diablo 4, there is a new feature, the Codex of Power. This works similarly to the Kanai’s Cube from Diablo 3 and stores certain legendary effects.
In simple terms: Effects that you normally find on legendary items can simply be found as “power” and stored in the Codex. You can then transfer the corresponding power to a new item, and you can do this as often as you like.
In a stream on December 15, the developers talked among other things about the battle pass in Diablo 4 and its costs, as well as the Codex and what powers you can obtain for it.
How do I get the effects? If you complete a dungeon in Diablo 4, you will receive a legendary “aspect” as a reward at the end. As the developers explain, there are over 120 dungeons that will provide you with the corresponding effects. Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora says:
When [players] visit the dungeons and dive deep into them, they will find aspects for the Codex of Power there. These are essentially legendary effects. Each of these dungeons in the overworld houses a unique aspect. […] There are over 120 dungeons in the game.
Earlier, there was even talk of 150 dungeons, which I thought was nonsense at the time. Considering the legendary effects, however, it sounds more plausible that there will indeed be more or less unique dungeons playable.
However, there is a catch: legendary effects in the Codex of Power always come with the worst effect possible. This means that every number and every effect only brings the absolute minimum.
Moreover, you cannot obtain all legendary effects in this way, but you can get effects from every class. You will see in the Codex which dungeon you will get the corresponding aspect.

What do the effects bring me then? Nevertheless, the Codex of Power is useful, as it enables you to create certain builds. If you are missing just a specific effect to play your build, you can simply use it. Diablo Immortal has a similar system.
Synergies between effects are often more important in Diablo than the strength of an effect itself. So, you can first try whether the build suits you at all, before you set out to look for stronger effects. Aspects will be unlocked for all characters.
This also aligns with the philosophy of builds in general. Through skills on items, you should be able to test abilities and be able to reskill repeatedly with increasing gold costs. This is limited by a sum of gold that will eventually become immensely high, but still provides flexibility.

Where do I get better effects? Diablo 4 relies on the principle of looting and leveling, like all its predecessors. You will only find the best items by chance, and legendary effects there are stronger in most cases. So, you will still have to grind quite a bit.
There is also a practical possibility here: legendary effects can be extracted from equipment as “aspect crystals.” These crystals are items that you can use once to transfer an effect to another item. This also applies to effects that do not drop in dungeons.
However, when transferring an essence, you always overwrite the existing effect on another item.
