In Diablo 4, there are various methods to level up your characters to max level. The Diablo expert wudijo reached level 60 by opening chests.
Which chests did he open? In his livestream on Twitch, the Diablo expert wudijo opened numerous chests that he received from the “Whispering Tree” on torment level 4 on October 12, 2024. The chests contain items, nightmare seals, but also important materials. The drops from the “Forgotten Souls” from the Whisper chests have recently been increased.
You receive a chest when you collect 10 “Gruesome Gifts” in Diablo 4. You get the gifts for various activities in the game that are marked as “Whispering”. You can recognize them by the reddish/pinkish symbols on the map.
The following activities can appear as whisper tasks:
- Whisper tasks in the open world – there are always some active
- Whisper tasks in the Hell Flood
- Whisper dungeons
- Hell hordes
- Uber bosses and world bosses
- Realmwalker events
- The Lower City of Kurast
- PvP bosses and PvP rituals
In general, you should always keep an eye on the map, as Uber bosses and the Lower City of Kurast can now also be marked as whisper tasks. For tasks like dungeons, bosses, and the Lower City, you will receive 5 gifts each. Therefore, with two of them, you already get a chest.

How did he level with the chests? You receive XP when you exchange your gifts at the Whispering Tree for a chest. Once you open it, you also get XP again. wudijo collected a bunch of chests in his loot chest on torment level 4, created a new character, and opened the chests with it.
In the YouTube video about the livestream, you can see that some chests did not give XP. This could be related to the ground being too full. After wudijo picked up and dismantled some items, he collected XP again. It didn’t seem to make a difference whether it was a normal or large chest.
With 27 chests, he reached the new max level of 60. Opening them took only a few minutes – gathering the chests naturally took longer. Many tasks are done incidentally at high levels while grinding – such as world bosses or tasks in the Hell Flood.
Is it worth it? In the video, the Diablo expert states at the end that the time spent collecting the chests is probably not less than what would be needed for leveling. An alternative would be to collect 5 chests and level up to around level 40 with them.
If you play long with your main character and already have good gear, it makes sense to collect the chests for additional characters in the season. Gold and many materials are shared across the account anyway, and items from the chests can be stored in the shared loot chest.
We also tested the method and leveled from torment level 3 to level 34 with 5 chests. Of those, 2 chests were legendary. Whether you find this method useful for leveling your characters, or whether you prefer to use “normal” activities for that, is up to you.
There are various methods to level characters. In the endgame, the Pit in Season 6 seems to be a particularly good option. Before reaching that point, activities like the Hell Flood or (Nightmare) dungeons are suitable.
