The occultist has been one of the most important endgame mechanics in Diablo 4 since its release. With its abilities, you exchange effects on items and improve them – at a cost. The expert wudijo has now calculated the chances of getting the best stats. The result of his test is not very encouraging.
What exactly does the occultist do?
- With the occultist, you can forge aspects on items and change their stats. This works by selecting an unwanted stat and transforming it into a new one.
- However, this costs a lot of money and increasingly so: The costs for a perfect item can easily reach hundreds of millions of gold – despite the change. In addition, material costs such as the rare angel’s breath come into play.
- You might have the impression that you don’t get the stat you need. This might now be supported by a test.
So what are the chances now? wudijo is one of the leading experts on Diablo. His assessments form the basis for several rankings of the best builds in the tier list.
In a new video, wudijo analyzed the rerolls at the occultist (via YouTube). His assistant Avarilyn provided insight into 1,000 attempts in which an item was rerolled at the occultist.
From the list, a probability emerges for a stat that you find on an item. Here, an amulet was used in the trial for a hunter. The result:
- The most common stat is maximum life, appearing 44% of the time.
- The main attribute, here dexterity, is still one of the most common stats at 8.8%.
- Cooldown reduction, a good stat for many classes, is at a mere 3.4%.
- Resistances, on the other hand, have a chance of roughly between 6 and 7%.
- Passive skills, such as looting with the huntress, range between 0.5% and 1.5%.

Stats like percentage damage or energy on kills, which almost no one needs, were part of between 10 and 17% of the rerolls. The stats that are really important for many classes are further down the list.

“Side effect of itemization”
The expert explains that in many cases, you are probably better off finding a better item than spending millions or billions of gold at the occultist. If you have an item that already has several rare stats that you need, rerolling becomes easier.
wudijo calculates that you need 200 rerolls alone for a 92.7% chance of exploiting an amulet. This corresponds to almost a billion gold and thus several dozen hours of grinding just to get the gold.
Cooldown reduction (“CDR”) alone is already hard to come by, and it is not even one of the best stats because it has a lot of competition. It is merely a “go-to stat” for many classes.
wudijo believes it is acceptable that certain stats are rarer than others. Only the extent at the occultist is too harsh:
“[…] especially with the cost of enchanting. You can invest hundreds of rolls and not even see the result you want. That’s somewhat ridiculous, I think. I hope Blizzard takes this to heart and makes some changes. It could just be a side effect of the new itemization where nobody considered the occultist. I can even somewhat understand that, but this is something I would like to see addressed in the future.”
It is acceptable if the “best in slot” items remain virtually unattainable. But not being able to adjust your equipment to your preferences is “a bit of a misfire.” We already know that Blizzard wants to build on and improve the current systems.
