In the first cinematic trailer for Diablo 4, the demoness Lilith is freed from her prison. Lilith is a central character in the Diablo games; here’s what you need to know about her.
To understand who Lilith is and how important her role is in the Diablo universe, we have to go back many millennia in history. At a time when there were no humans and no Sanctuary. Back then, the Eternal Conflict raged, the war between angels and demons, relentless.
Who is Lilith? The demoness Lilith has many names and titles. These include:
- Queen of Succubi
- Daughter of Hatred
- Mother of Deception
- Lady of Betrayal
Lilith is the daughter of Mephisto, Lord of Hatred and leader of the three Prime Evils. She also had a brother, Lucion, to whom she was very close.
The Rebel Daughter
What role did Lilith play in the Eternal Conflict? As the daughter of Mephisto, Lilith was drawn into the Eternal Conflict, whether she wanted to be or not. Over the centuries, she began to question the leadership style of her father and his brothers.
My father is satisfied to fight the same battles and face the same enemies while everything around him turns to dust. Even if his victories may last a day or a year, or a century, the war will never be won as long as he and his brothers lead us.
Lilith
After one of the battles against the High Heaven, Lilith captured an angel for her amusement. It was the archangel Inarius, an advisor to the Angiris Council in strategic matters.
The demoness and the angel quickly realized that their views on the Eternal Conflict were quite similar. Inarius was also tired of fighting a meaningless battle that would never come to an end.
Lilith and he decided to unite and find a way to exit the war. Along with some like-minded individuals, they stole the Worldstone from the Pandemonium Fortress.
With the help of the stone, they created an entirely new world and hid it from the eyes of angels and demons.
They called the world Sanctuary. There they could live together in peace, far away from the war they did not want any part of.
What happened after the creation of Sanctuary? Lilith and Inarius’ hopes for a peaceful life initially held strong. Like many of their followers who had also fled to Sanctuary, the two eventually had children.
The merging of angels and demons brought forth new beings: the Nephalem. But over time, the parents noticed that their children were significantly more powerful than they were themselves. And some of them became afraid.

What happens when the children one day conspire against their parents? What if the angels or demons discover the world of Sanctuary? Disputes arose in which some of the fallen angels and demons suggested that the Nephalem be destroyed before it was too late.
But that drove Lilith into a rage. She transformed into a monster and slaughtered her former followers. When Inarius discovered their corpses, he confronted Lilith. But he could not bring himself to kill her and instead banished her to the Dimension of Nothingness.
What happened after her banishment? To reduce the power of his children, the Nephalem, Inarius manipulated the Worldstone. Each new generation of the Nephalem became weaker. They became mortal. They became human.
It was inevitable that the angels and demons would sooner or later find the world of Sanctuary. When that happened, a new war broke out for dominance over humankind. They established religions and cults to subjugate the will of the people. This age became known as the Sin War.

During the Sin War, Lilith managed to free herself from her prison.
She manipulated one of the last Nephalem named Uldyssian to awaken his power and use it for her purposes. Her goal was to bring back the Nephalem and take revenge. But in the end, she was defeated by Uldyssian, and Inarius banished her again.
Inarius himself was eventually captured by Mephisto, Lilith’s father, and tortured forever.
The events surrounding the Sin War are from the novel series of the same name by Richard A. Knaak. While they are considered a firm part of Diablo lore, it is hard to say to what extent Blizzard will adhere to them in Diablo 4.
Mommy is back, and she is really angry
What happens in the trailers? In the first trailer for Diablo 4, we see how Lilith returns after many millennia of banishment. Three people, two grave robbers and a scholar, are lured to the site of her banishment with promises of wealth and knowledge.
There, her blood is used to create a portal through which Lilith returns. The trailer is mostly straightforward and understandable, but there are some hidden details.
Interesting are particularly the images that briefly flash as Lilith tries to pass through the blood portal. Fans suspect these are things that Lilith could see in visions while she was in her banishment. In one of them, a chained angel can be seen. It is Inarius.
The archangel appears for the first time in the release trailer for Diablo 4, where he leads an army into the depths of Hell. He has apparently broken free from his prison but is now returning to find Lilith.
The focus of the story of Diablo 4 will be on the conflict between the former lovers.
Is Lilith “evil”? There is a theory circulating in the community that Lilith might not actually be our opponent in Diablo 4. Fans argue that her interest has always been to protect her children and restore the true power of the Nephalem.
The man in the video, her son Rathma, also asks Lilith for help and protection. At the time of her awakening, the world of Sanctuary is obviously in ruins.
Something must have happened since we, as Nephalem, defeated Malthael. Some fans suspect that Lilith was indeed awakened to protect her children from a danger which we have not yet learned about.
However, we also know that Lilith is very power-hungry and vengeful. During the Sin War, she wanted to create an army of Nephalem to use for her purposes. It will definitely be exciting to see what awaits us in the story of Diablo 4.
What do you think? Will Lilith be our opponent or ally? What do you think of her character?
