Diablo 4 is a difficult topic in the hack & slash community. A long-awaited game that has disappointed many players after the great campaign. Rod Fergusson, the General Manager of Diablo, now talks about the future of Diablo 4 and how long they intend to support the game.
Where does the information come from? The American news site “Dexerto” conducted an interview with the General Manager of Diablo 4, Rod Fergusson. This primarily focused on how long Blizzard wants to support the hack & slash and what the future holds for upcoming DLCs and expansions.
As Diablo 3 has been supported for 11 years, but Blizzard was not satisfied with the implementation, the team wants to take a different path to meet the community’s expectations.
Many years and DLCs are expected to follow in the future
What was discussed in the interview? Patrick Dane, the journalist behind the interview, opened the conversation with the following question: “This is a broader question: How long does the future of Diablo 4 last? How far does this vision go? You know, we have the launch behind us, which had a really nice, compact campaign. And now we are dealing with the seasonal things. How long can this last?”.
Rod Fergusson responded as follows:
But you know, it’s years and years. That’s what we’re focusing on. When you look at the launch of the game and this first season, we see it as a foundation to build on for the future.
So when we look at our quarterly seasons and our annual expansions, those are the things we are really focusing on in our live service. We have plans, we have storylines that stretch far into the future. […]
When you look back and realize that there were 11 years between D3 and D4, it feels like we haven’t done justice to our players, our community, and what they deserve. That’s something we want to correct in D4 with our seasons and our expansions.

Here Rod Fergusson talks about annual expansions that are expected to take place in the coming years. How large these expansions will be and whether new classes will also be introduced into the game is still unclear. The fact is, Blizzard wants to engage its players more intensively than has been the case with Diablo 3.

The system resembles Destiny 2: The upcoming DLCs and seasons are likely to be monetized. If you know Destiny 2, this system may also seem familiar to you. Bungie also monetizes Destiny 2 in the same style:
- Annual DLCs
- 4 seasons per year
Both can be purchased together in a large package or separately. It is possible that Blizzard is taking a page from Bungie’s book and wants to implement a similar system to keep Diablo 4 alive.
Only the future will show how large the expansions and prices will be, but until then, what do you think about Blizzard’s plans? Are you interested in the upcoming system or do you have no interest?
