What are ancestral items? In Diablo 4, you can find 3 types of items:
- Normal items
- Holy items
- Legacy items (This is the term for ancestral items in Diablo 4)
Every item, whether white
, legendary, or unique, can fall under these 3 categories. However, you will only find holy and legacy items at higher world tiers. The ancestral items are the best of the 3 and can significantly enhance your build.

Diablo 4: Ancestral Items – Locations and Features
Where do I find ancestral items? Ancestral items are the best of the 3 item types and thus the most difficult to unlock. You can only find them in world tier 4. For that, you must complete the following first:
- Campaign of Diablo 4 must be completed
- For world tier 3, you must complete the dungeon “Cathedral of Light”
- For world tier 4, you also need to complete the dungeon “Fallen Temple”
Once you have completed the dungeon, you can set the world tier to 4 in Kyovashad. Generally, you should be around level 70 to be able to enjoy yourself in world tier 4.
Where is the best place to find ancestral items? Theoretically, ancestral items can drop in world tier 4 at any time. The Whispering Tree and Hell Flood are good places for farming.

What makes ancestral items so special? Ancestral items are generally more powerful than normal or holy items.
- Ancestral items have an average item power of 750
- Ancestral items have higher values than normal and holy items due to their higher item power
- More affixes than normal items
- Ancestral items can drop in all rarities
Holy and ancestral items also have one additional affix compared to normal items. Accordingly, they may have, for example, higher armor values.
