Basically, the season characters are separated from the normal characters in Diablo 4. However, with a trick, one could circumvent the separation and is now facing the wrath of the developers of Blizzard.
What was the trick? If you want to experience all the new content of Season 1 of Diablo 4, you need a seasonal character on the season realm. Normal characters belong to the Eternal Realm.
After the season, seasonal characters will be transferred to the Eternal Realm; before that, the items and inventories should actually be strictly separated.
A trick could bypass the realm separation. Pulling the internet plug at the right time allowed players to use the currency, resources, and equipment of the Eternal Realm on the season realm. Those who exploited it now have to fear a ban.

Meanwhile, many reports from players can be found, either knowing someone who has been banned for this reason or themselves having lost access to their account.
The Community Director of Diablo 4 also speaks out in the Blizzard forum (via bluetracker.com): “We have also taken measures against selected accounts related to this incident.”
On the discussion platform Reddit, the excitement about the announcement is great. A thread collected over 3,000 upvotes within two days with more than 1,600 comments (via reddit.com). A player reports here that “a buddy” was banned due to the exploit.
Is the exploit still in the game? According to the Community Director, the season exploit should no longer be in the game for several days. However, if a character has been transferred once, it is part of the season.
It seems that not all players are banned, but only “selected accounts” that may have fully exploited the exploit. Whether there is a chance for banned players to return is currently unclear.
