In Diablo 4, there are a few important rules that you should definitely pay attention to and not break, in order to avoid attracting the wrath of Lilith or other players.
Below, we summarize unwritten rules for Diablo 4 that apply to all players, regardless of which class they play. Of course, these are not “real” rules or laws; you do not have to adhere to them. The article should be taken with a grain of salt.
Nevertheless, there are unwritten rules that can make your life in Sanctuary easier and particularly provide new players with a smoother entry. Additionally, these rules allow you to grind more effectively and earn experience points.
Do not run past the altars of Lilith
As you walk or ride through Sanctuary, you will encounter statues of Lilith. These can be found in all areas. When you interact with them, one of your primary attributes is permanently improved – and this applies to all your characters. So, do not simply run past them.
This is why you should activate all altars: The enhancements you receive from the altars are permanent and apply to every character on your account. So even for those you create later. If you want to try out a new class, you already have a small advantage at the early levels.
And since you are already on your way to “collect” all the altars, you should also uncover the entire map, as that will carry over to your new characters.
Note: This only applies if you are not on Hardcore or switching from Hardcore to normal mode. When switching, you have to uncover and collect everything again.
As you progress in regional advancement, you also unlock additional slots for your healing potions:

Do not ignore upgrading your healing potion
In Diablo 4, you can upgrade your potion at the alchemist upon reaching certain levels. Once this is possible, you will see an upward arrow on the potion icon in your action bar.
This is why you should not ignore it: In some games, you find various potions on your travels that can restore your health, including small, medium, and large healing potions.
However, in Diablo 4, you upgrade the potion itself. Every potion you pick up has that exact size. If you do not upgrade it, you will be carrying a healing potion that cannot fully utilize its healing power.
No active elixir = lost XP
In Diablo 4, there are several ways to boost your farming of experience points (XP) a bit. You can team up with other players to receive a group bonus on XP. But you should also always remember to activate elixirs.
This is why you should activate an elixir: Elixirs not only provide you with specific bonuses, such as a better evasion chance or resistances against fire, poison, and other elements. They also give you a 5% bonus on earned XP.
Some elixirs can already be crafted at low levels with materials that are easy to farm: The “Weak Elixir of Iron Thorns” can be crafted with 5 Grave Vines and 5 Bite Berries.
Revive fallen players
You may be familiar with the situation: You are doing an event somewhere in Sanctuary. More and more mobs spawn, elite enemies slow or stun you, you take so much damage that you cannot handle it and die. You can respawn, but then you have to repair your damaged equipment for gold.
This is why you should revive players: If someone revives you in such a situation, you save yourself the repair costs, and your equipment stays intact – as if nothing ever happened. So if you see the gravestone of a “dead” player character, do them a favor and revive them with a click.
However, there are also situations where you need to weigh this – such as during fights against world bosses. Reviving can quickly lead to your player character’s demise as well.
Whoever stands in the city gains no XP
Of course, you cannot constantly run through dungeons or events and need to return to the city to empty your inventory, craft potions, or take a short break. But you should note that during this time, you are not earning any XP.
This is why you should keep this in mind: Especially in group play, you should be considerate of your teammates. Minimize your time in the city as long as you are not playing alone, because: While you pet the dog, sort your chests, or chat with NPCs, you and your group members miss out on XP.
Also, players on Reddit are collecting a few “unwritten rules” for Diablo 4. Although the post dates back to October 25, 2023, the rules are generally formulated and thus timeless:
- If [you ride to a world boss alongside other players], it is always a race to see who arrives first, even if they don’t know we are racing.
- If you see someone spinning like a Beyblade, you must also spin like a Beyblade.
- When you join an ongoing event, always let the person who started the event open the loot chest at the end.
- When you join an event, always use the hello emote.
- Always pet the dogs.
