A group of 3 players managed to set two world records in Diablo 3 with a speedrun.
What kind of speedrun was it? Speedruns are very popular in games, including in the hack and slash Diablo 3. Players try to complete the story as quickly as possible in specific group compositions and defeat the final bosses Diablo and Malthael.
The players meatr0o, Heckson, and Whisperra achieved this in a time of 1 hour, 19 minutes, and 5 seconds. With that, they took the top spot on the leaderboard.
How high was the previous record? Two years ago, the players ViperD3, Shippo_Tail, and Garfm set the record with a time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, and 40 seconds (via Speedrun.com).
Two records in one sweep
What is special about this speedrun? Not only did meatr0o, Heckson, and Whisperra secure the new world record for 3-player groups. Their time was so fast that they even broke the previous record for 4-player groups. That record was set by meatr0o, Whisperra, blakjack, and Heckson about a year ago with a time of 1 hour, 20 minutes, and 52 seconds.
So, meatr0o, Heckson, and Whisperra broke their own record, even though they were missing a fourth player this time.
How did they do it? Based on the video, you can see how the players proceeded. What stands out is that they work very coordinated, know exactly what to do, and can rely perfectly on each other. The ideal conditions for a group speedrun.
The video also shows that luck plays an important role in these speedruns. The group found very good loot, which naturally helps them defeat the enemies quickly. If they hadn’t had such luck with the loot drops, the record might not have been broken.
An important part of the plan was the Diablo “Balance” (engl. “Balance”). They need it for their monk classes. Because the weapon greatly increases an important ability:
“Balance: Increases the damage of ‘Lightning Front’ by [400% to 600%] and grants the skill a critical hit chance of 100% if it hits 3 or fewer enemies.”
Finding the weapon is associated with a lot of luck. They found the Diablo several times during the speedrun.
The three also explain that teamwork is the key to success. They minimize, for example, the time that regular players spend comparing items, returning to and selling loot by always having one player work on the next objective.
Also interesting is the “Break,” which occurs repeatedly. When a player calls “Break,” everyone drops everything and starts destroying vases, which gives a speed boost. It’s exciting to see how the three proceed to break not just one but two speedrun world records in Diablo 3.
