In Diablo 3 the start of Season 22 is approaching. MyMMO editor Patrick Freese is especially looking forward to this season. What makes the new season so good?
What’s happening in Diablo 3? In just a few days, the current Season 21 will end. I have played it for a few hours and already had to realize that this will not be one of my highlights.
The seasonal theme seemed cool at first glance, but quickly turned out to be an annoying addition. Because about every 90 seconds, a loud “tröööööt“ echoed through my speakers directly into my head. Luckily, I was not the only one who found this extremely annoying. Blizzard mostly fixed the problems with a hotfix. But that didn’t help me. Season 21 showed me why it is finally time for Diablo 4.
But with Season 22, I find motivation again to engage with the new season. The exciting seasonal theme, changes to Kanai’s Cube, and more are reasons for players who have been away for a long time to take a look again.
What makes the seasonal theme good?
I’m looking forward to: I have already briefly gotten to know the seasonal theme on the PTR server and was glad about it. Because unlike Season 21, the bonus doesn’t happen guaranteed every 90 seconds, but is luck-dependent. When you activate a pylon or shrine, a shadow clone of your class is created. You can see what that looks like here in this video by YouTuber wudijo:
This clone has one of three possible builds per class active. Witch Doctors can master the following:
- A build with Zombie Attackers, Fire Bomb, and Grasp of the Dead
- A build with Wall of Death, Hex, and Zombie Attackers
- A build with Mass Confusion, Horrify, and Spirit Barrage

The good thing about it is that the theme is so unpredictable. You never know how much luck you will have with the pylons or shrines and at what moment you will find one. Then it will also be exciting to see how strong the shadow clones ultimately become on the live servers.
Another argument that makes this bonus so cool is that each class has a somewhat different experience. This could create entirely new synergies, and the meta could be shaken up significantly.
I’m really excited to try it out.
What other bonuses are there?
Even if the shadow clones on the live servers are not as cool as I hope, there’s still the improved Kanai’s Cube. And this change should make everyone happy who loves to experiment with builds.
What changes with the cube: During other seasons and normal gameplay, you are limited to three cube slots in Kanai’s Cube in Diablo 3. However, this is going to change now.
In Season 22, Kanai’s Cube will have a fourth slot. And you can fill that with armor, jewelry, or a weapon as you like. It should be noted that you cannot activate the same item in the cube twice.
Why is this cool? With the fourth slot, you can make strong mainstream builds even stronger. This appeals to anyone who simply follows the tier list and plays the builds that are most successful in greater rifts.
But players who enjoy experimenting can now get even more creative and combine items in ways that were not possible before.
Many new sets
What has changed? This point is interesting for returners and active players. Over the last three seasons, the developers of Diablo 3 have provided each class with a new set.
- Barbarian – The Horde of the Ninety Wild
- Demon Hunter – Gear of Terror
- Witch Doctor – Mundunugu’s Regalia
- Crusader – Aegis of Valor
- Monk – Pattern of Justice
- Necromancer – Mask of the Burning Carnival
- Wizard – The Typhon’s Veil
Why is this cool? Returners now have a new set to try with every class in Season 22. Combined with the improvement of Kanai’s Cube, there are now even more options for how to play the new sets.
But this is also good for active players. If you have already liked some of the new sets, you can enhance them even more with the fourth cube slot. And additionally, see how well they harmonize with the shadow clones and whether you can push the best performances in the Greater Rift even further.
Conclusion
After the four-month drought that Season 21 was for me, there is finally something to discover again. I can’t wait to beat my way through Nephalem portals with the shadow clones and to squeeze the last bit of potential out of my builds with the fourth slot in Kanai’s Cube.
While this is still a long way from being a substitute for Diablo 4, it’s finally welcome new content for Diablo 3.
