The results of this year’s BlizzCon disappointed many Diablo fans. How could Diablo 3 be improved?
The hopes for this year’s BlizzCon were high. Especially Diablo fans expected a big announcement, as this year marks the 20th anniversary of Blizzard’s hack-and-slash game. A Twitter message from the official Diablo account gave fans even more hope. But with the announcements of this BlizzCon, the players were probably not prepared. Disappointment is spreading on the internet. What did Blizzard do wrong?
Fans wanted Diablo 4
There were many theories about what announcements Blizzard might surprise us with this year. Some players speculated about a completely new game. Not an expansion and not a simple update. No, it was supposed to be a brand new Diablo 4. This wish could often be seen in various social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and others. Just before this year’s BlizzCon, a “leak” circulated and caused excitement among some fans. A picture in the shop clearly showed the Necromancer. It was unclear whether this leak would come true and how the new class would be integrated into the game.
For the fans who were looking forward to Diablo 4, there was a great disillusionment at BlizzCon. All conspiracy theories about a new installment in the Diablo series were null and void. The developers announced a “Diablo 1″ remake in Diablo 3 as an annual event. In the form of a dungeon with 16 levels, you can fight the old bosses.
The second announcement was the new Necromancer class, which can be played by purchasing a DLC. This DLC is called “The Rise of the Necromancer,” unlocking additional loot spots, character slots, and cosmetic items alongside the Necromancer. Those were the two major announcements for Diablo 3 during BlizzCon.
This caused pure disappointment among some fans. Of course, a new class is a positive thing and will probably bring some excitement back to Diablo 3, but in the end, it is a Necromancer and not a fun summoner. This class will not change much about the problems that are increasingly being mentioned on Reddit and other platforms. “The Paragon system needs a revamp,” “Seasons are always the same and get boring too quickly,” “You only get excited about a few items you find in the game.” The new Challenge Rifts and the armory in Diablo 3 simplify the constant changing of equipment, but are not “The big change” that many fans had hoped for.
Can Diablo 3 be improved or does it need Diablo 4?
With a paid DLC, the journey continues in Diablo 3. There are new contents for a sum X, which will initially create some fresh air. Nevertheless, you are still playing the same game. Of course, this can work if you consider some (not all) content patches in World of Warcraft. Economic sense might also justify starting such a model. But how long can this last before one should put a pin in Diablo 3 and open the chapter “Diablo 4”?

What is your opinion on the current state of Diablo 3? Is Blizzard taking steps in the right direction or are they moving away from the goal with these changes?
