Followers in Diablo 3 often receive far too little attention, especially the selection of certain items can provide a significant damage boost that will help you not only in Greater Rifts.
How to properly equip your followers in Diablo 3
The TEMPLAR is especially well-suited as a follower because he has various abilities and healing skills that can keep you alive longer in combat. If you don’t need these survival skills, the Sorceress is also a great option. However, what is special about this season are the changes to various items. In this guide, we particularly consider the changes to the Oculus Ring.
Before patch 2.4.1, the holder of the ring had to deliver the killing blow to a monster for the ring to trigger its special ability. Now, however, the ring activates this ability even when the follower wears it and you deliver the killing blow yourself. Additionally, the Oculus Ring has a low internal cooldown, meaning you will almost constantly have the “area of focused power” among the enemies. For solo Greater Rifts, this ring is now an absolute must!
The other items your follower wears are more optional:
- As a weapon, you can choose to use Thunderfury to get an extra slow effect.
- Johan’s Essence is a good choice as an amulet since it pulls enemies together.
- For rings: Oculus Ring and Unity (if you need the extra damage reduction) or Wyrdward (for a chance at an additional stun).
- You can fill the shield slot with Freezing Deflection – as it gives you a chance to stun enemies additionally.
- To ensure your follower doesn’t die, you should choose the relic Enchanting Favor.
For the weapon, ensure it has high attack speed and cooldown reduction. The higher attack speed will trigger the item abilities more often. The cooldown reduction affects the abilities of the Templar.
You should not hire the Scoundrel as there is no useful weapon for this follower. Alternatively, you can choose the Sorceress instead of the Templar – however, when building skills, pay attention to whether you really need one of the Tier 1 talents, as these can be counterproductive to combat.
