In Diablo 3 is now the event “The Darkness in Tristram” active. For you, there are now temporarily two pets. In this guide, we show you how to get the Calf of the Crown and the Mini Butcher as companions.
What is this event? Every year in January, the birthday of the franchise is celebrated in Diablo 3. Exclusive content is unlocked for this occasion. The focus is on the dungeon Darkness in Tristram, which, with its retro look and bosses from Diablo 1, evokes nostalgia. The portal for this opened on January 4, 2021.
A pixel filter, special sounds, and controls provide nostalgic gaming feelings. In 16 levels, you can face the old bosses of the series in the dungeon.
As every year, there are the two pets that you can add to your collection since Patch 2.4.3. If you do not yet possess the Calf of the Crown pet and the Butcher pet in Diablo 3, you can now secure both companions with our guide.
Rotten Mushroom – Farming the Calf of the Crown 2021
Finding the Rotten Mushroom: Start a game in Adventure Mode. Then open the map and find the waypoint to the Tristram event (Act 1 – The Old Ruins). From the waypoint, walk to the left. Next to a well, you will find a blue portal named “Tristram”.
Enter the dungeon and fight through the levels. Once you reach level 9, you should keep an eye out. The rotten mushroom can spawn there. It can be clicked on the floor and collected. In its unpicked state, it is initially called “black mushroom”. In your inventory, it is then referred to as rotten mushroom.
Now take this mushroom in your inventory to Adria’s cauldron. You will find it on the way from the Tristram portal to the dungeon. In a small detour, away from the path, you will find the cauldron in the dilapidated hut. Right-click it, and you will receive the Witch Elixir.

Obtain the plan for Wirt’s Leg: After you have looted the elixir, go near the Tristram portal, and you can loot the corpses there.
- Farnham’s corpse drops the debts of a drunkard,
- Odgen’s corpse drops Garda’s letter,
- Pepin’s corpse drops the healer’s recipe
- and Griswold’s corpse drops the plan for Wirt’s Leg.
With the recipe for Wirt’s Leg, go to the town and to your blacksmith.
- Craft the legendary mace Wirt’s Leg at the blacksmith (costs 1 million gold)
- Dismantle the just built Wirt’s Leg mace again at the blacksmith
- You will receive the Map of the Stars
- Travel again to Adria’s hut on the way to the dungeon portal
- To the right of her hut lie 3 dead cows
- Click these in the order of the star map.
- The left cow is number 1, the middle cow is number 2, and the right cow is number 3.
- The map shows the order 2, 1, 3 – So first click the middle, then the left, and then the right cow
- A portal to the abandoned farmhouse opens to the right of the cows
- In the middle of the yard, you will find Wirt’s treasure chest. Open it and loot the Calf of the Crown
- Right-click to add the calf to your collection
How to get the Mini Butcher pet
This is what you need to do: The Mini Butcher is tied to an achievement in Diablo 3. If you unlock the achievement “A sinister red glow clouds your vision,” you will receive the pet.
This is how to achieve it:
- Create a fresh level 1 character in solo play
- Complete the dungeon “The Darkness in Tristram” with this new character and kill Diablo there
- As a reward, you will receive the achievement + pet
