The new game from Blizzard, Diablo 2: Resurrected, receives positive ratings from professional critics on Metacritic, but the user rating sparkles red. Many express frustration in review reports about the technical condition of the remaster.
This is how Diablo 2 performs with professional critics on Metacritic: The websites listed on Metacritic rate Diablo 2 Resurrected quite positively:
- The PC version receives 82% out of 100% possible points.
- The PS5 version even gets 83%.
The German PC magazine GameStar rates Diablo 2: Resurrected at about 82%, hitting the average exactly. The reviewer Natalie Schermann calls the game a “beautifully remastered masterpiece,” but criticizes that only the bare minimum has been done with new gameplay elements (via GameStar).
Jeuxvideo judges the PS5 version similarly: It states that it is a “technically updated version of the original” that respects the original gameplay.
“I just can’t play it”
But this is what the player ratings say: The PC version of Diablo 2: Resurrected fares much worse at player ratings. It stands at 48%. And the rating has improved, it was at 34% over the weekend.
It looks really bad for the user reviews of Diablo 2 Resurrected on Xbox Series X; after 30 player reviews, Diablo 2 Resurrected has a rating of 29%.
In the negative user ratings, the criticism mainly revolves around technical difficulties players have at launch. For many, “Diablo 2: Resurrected” has turned into “Diablo 2: Refunded” – they returned the game.
The main criticism from players is: They simply could not log into Diablo 2 Resurrected. Additionally, the game is rife with bugs.
In the console version for Xbox Series X, it is also criticized that Diablo 2 Resurrected lacks lobbies. This was already a major point of criticism before the release. For many players, lobbies are a basic requirement to play Diablo 2 online properly.
What lies behind it: Metacritic is often used like Amazon reviews or Steam reviews to express immediate frustration about the circumstances of a launch. It is easy to give 0 points during an “I was so excited, but then I couldn’t play” outburst.
In fact, Diablo 2 had really serious problems for some players, which also reflected in the rating:
