Blizzard released the new Patch 2.5 for Diablo 2: Resurrected on September 22, 2022. The biggest new feature is the Terror Zones, which make monsters stronger in various areas. In addition, there are over 70 bug fixes and adjustments, as well as a preview of Season 2.
What does the update change? With Patch 2.5, Terror Zones are introduced. When activated, these strengthen an area in the game every hour. Monsters in terrorized zones become stronger, depending on their type, between +2 to +5 levels compared to you.
You can identify terrorized zones by special icons on the monsters and the keyword “Terrorized” on the minimap. Additionally, terrorized zones are bathed in a special light.
Waypoints closest to the zone are highlighted in purple. You can activate Terror Zones for your game once you have defeated Baal at least once with the corresponding character and on the appropriate difficulty.
What do Terror Zones bring me? Enemies grant you more loot and experience based on their “new” level. The goal is to offer you an alternative leveling method that does not solely consist of dull Baal runs.
Repeatedly killing Baal has been one of the most common methods for leveling since the release of Lord of Destruction in July 2001. In the 21 years players have developed other methods, but Baal runs are still the go-to method today. At least until now.
The patch also includes a ton of bug fixes and “Quality of Life” changes. You can find the complete patch notes on the official website of Diablo 2: Resurrected.

2. Ladder starts soon – Removes immunities from enemies for the first time
What’s included in the 2. Ladder? With the 2. Ladder, you will be able to obtain new spells (“Charms”), the Sunder Charms. These allow you for the first time to deal elemental damage to enemies against which they are normally immune.
From Hell, enemies can have such high resistances to magic, physical damage, or elemental damage that they become immune to it. Many builds, such as the Sorceress builds, rely on particularly strong spells of a specific element – such as frost or fire.
However, if an enemy is immune to that element, you can hardly kill them. The new spells reduce the resistance to 95%, even before other modifiers are calculated. This allows you to deal damage, but you will also receive correspondingly more damage of that type in return. The new spells are:
- The Black Cleft – Breaks magic immunity and reduces your resistance by 45-60 %
- The Bone Break – Breaks physical immunity and reduces your resistance by 10-30 %
- The Cold Rupture – Breaks cold immunity and reduces your resistance by 70-90 %
- The Crack of the Heavens – Breaks lightning immunity and reduces your resistance by 70-90 %
- The Flame Rift – Breaks fire immunity and reduces your resistance by 70-90 %
- The Rotting Fissure – Breaks poison immunity and reduces your resistance by 70-90 %
What exactly is the Ladder? Ladders are the feature that makes Diablo 2 so popular and are essentially the same as seasons that you might know from Diablo 3. You need to create a new character. The idea behind the system is that you measure yourself against other players to be the first to reach level 99.
Ladder characters have access to special loot, such as the new Sunder Charms, Horadrim recipes, or rune words. After the Ladder, your characters will be transferred to the standard games list and retain their special loot.

When does the Ladder start? The Patch 2.5 is already live, but the new Ladder will start on October 6 at 2:00 AM German time.
