If you play Diablo 2: Resurrected in singleplayer or multiplayer, do you need PS Plus on PlayStation 4/5 or Xbox Live Gold on Xbox Series X|S or One? We checked for you.
What it’s about: Diablo 2: Resurrected offers a singleplayer and a multiplayer. Players are now wondering whether they need the online subscriptions for PlayStation 4/5 or Xbox One Series X|S for singleplayer or multiplayer.
According to the developers, you can play singleplayer without the online services. What are the limitations?
Diablo 2: Resurrected runs without PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold, but …
What about PS Plus? On the product page of Diablo 2: Resurrected in the PS Store, it says that the game requires PS Plus for “online play” and online can support up to 8 players with PS+ (via PlayStation.com).
What about Xbox Live? On Microsoft’s website, it says “For the game, Xbox Live Gold (subscription sold separately) is required for use on Xbox” (via microsoft.com). However, this probably also refers to online play. Because we at MeinMMO tested and unplugged the LAN cable from the Xbox while D2:R was running in singleplayer – there were no interruptions and we could continue playing offline.
This is what Blizzard says: On the game’s website, there is an FAQ where the question arises about what you need for online play. There, Blizzard explains:
“Besides an internet connection, you need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to use multiplayer features on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. For PlayStation®5 and PlayStation®4, PlayStation Plus is required to use multiplayer features.“
However, this is specifically about online play. For that, on both consoles, the PS+/Xbox Live membership is required. But the singleplayer should work for you without these subscriptions.
We have reached out to Blizzard for clarification and will update the article as soon as we have a response.
