Diablo 2 Resurrected was supposed to finally bring the Ladder at the end of March. Fans eagerly awaited the beloved feature, but a whole series of serious and unforeseen problems with the Ladder make an early release impossible. What is the Ladder? The Ladder is a leaderboard and a popular feature of the original Diablo 2. You create a new character in the Ladder, with the aim of reaching Level 99 as quickly as possible.
This involves a sort of race against other players in multiplayer mode. The Ladder character lasts only as long as the current Ladder season does. After that, the hero is not deleted but is considered a normal character. However, he retains his entire inventory, which was earned in the Ladder.
At the end of the Ladder season, a leaderboard is created. There, you will see who the fastest hero was.
A Ladder character also has access to special content. This includes new runewords that you can even craft yourself.
Ladder causes problems that were not found in PTR testing
When will the Ladder arrive? The Ladder is currently not in the game and is eagerly awaited by players. After all, it is an important element of long-term motivation. Since January 2022, the Ladder has been in use on the test server and it was expected to be released at the end of February. Meanwhile, the release has been pushed to the end of March, but now that will not happen either.
What went wrong? In a blog post from Blizzard, it was recently revealed that the Ladder will not arrive at the end of March. The developers apologized for this. However, there were severe issues with integrating the Ladder into the live game, which meant everything had to be aborted and reset. The problems were:
- Large parts of the database were not correctly migrated.
- The database lacked an index, which led to massive delays in the game. Adding the index later was successful, but everything needs to be tested again to ensure it works properly.
- There were still problems with the databases from different regions.
All these problems were not noticed on the test server. According to the developers, this was due to the fact that test server environments in Diablo 2 are something completely new and therefore did not exist in the original game. Hence the numerous problems with database migration.
What happens next? Despite the problems, Blizzard remains optimistic. They have identified all the issues and are currently working on solutions.
However, this takes time, and therefore the next patch 2.4 will not arrive until April 14, 2022. The Ladder will come a bit later, on April 28.
