The alpha of Diablo 2 Resurrected already gave players the opportunity to search for bugs. They even found a dupe bug. This reminds of old times: No game is as associated with duping as Diablo 2.
This is duping: “Duping” is a term from the MMO scene. It was coined in the early 2000s in MMOs like Runescape or Everquest. But no game is as associated with “duping” as Blizzard’s classic, Diablo 2, from the year 2000.
In principle, the glitch always unfolds the same way: Through a trick, a crash, or a server lag, the game is deceived into duplicating an item. This way, a player then has not only one “Stone of Jordan” in the chest, but two.
These dupe bugs are spread and abused by many users in no time when they appear, which leads to the “virtual economy” in a game breaking down or suffering serious damage. There are then so many, cheated items or so much gold that “legitimately acquired” items lose value.
The honest fans expect the developer to respond immediately, in the worst case threatening “roll-backs”, where all progress made within a certain period is deleted.
Players specifically look for such duping bugs because they promise themselves great advantages:
- In 2003, a hat was duped more than 2 million times in Runescape
- In Diablo, the item “Stone of Jordan” was duped so frequently and strongly that it was already considered an unofficial currency. The dupe bug could then be caused by triggering a massive server lag
- In MMORPG ESO, a massive dupe exploit was known at release in April 2014, which harmed the economy
- In MMO ARK Survival Evolved, the developers had to bring out new servers in 2017, because the old ones were practically ruined by an exploit
This is how it is now in Diablo 2: In the alpha of Diablo 2, a player has already found a dupe bug through which an item can be duplicated. The exploit was also very easy to execute, as reported on reddit. Again, the bug is related to the chest in Diablo 2.
A player demonstrates the bug in a video, and you can see that there is an identical axe in the chest.
What happens now with the dupe bug? The bug has already been reported to Blizzard, and it is assumed that this exploit will be fixed.
Dupe bug reminds players of real Diablo 2
This is how it is discussed: Generally, the dupe bug is not seen as grave on reddit:
- It is pointed out that the bug only occurred in an alpha version of Diablo 2 Resurrected and Blizzard still has a lot of time to fix such bugs
- On the other hand, the bug now seems to occur only offline – the “offline” game or the game in “open Battle.net” has always been insecure in Diablo 2, anyone could always cheat. It is believed that this is not a bug that works in Battle.net
- Some players are even happy about the bug. It evokes a warm feeling of “the old days” in them. One player says: “Dupes were the thing I remember most about Diablo 2. That and the one day a legit Stone of Jordan dropped for me.
It seems that Diablo 2 Resurrected is really close to the original at least in this respect:
