Trion Worlds has secured the Korean MMORPG with strong hack-and-slash elements Devilian and presented it in a one-hour stream.
Hopefully not a bad omen…

If one is a little mischievous, one must smile at the first few minutes of the stream. The old “ArcheAge” crew is there with the community manager and the producer who oversaw Trion Worlds’ last Korean import, who have since left the project.
And problems arise immediately: The first few minutes in the “new” era, the in-game sounds are clearly too loud. You go into the menu, turn it down, and nothing changes: still too loud. Then it becomes apparent that a trailer is still open in the background and blaring at full volume. “This is starting off well!”, might say some malicious tongues.
Hack’n Slash meets MMORPG: The best of both worlds?
In the stream, they are keen to highlight the advantages of the game. It essentially combines the feature depth, social contacts, and close connection to the character of an MMORPG with the action combat of a “hack-and-slash”, the fast mouse movements, and so on. There’s supposedly a lot to do, they say.
Also, CEO Scott Hartsman is supposedly a big fan of the title, having already spent numerous hours in Devilian, it is said.
The Classes of Devilian
In the stream, before getting into gameplay, they present the four classes:
- The class “Evoker” is a sorceress with spectacular effects. She can pull enemies towards her and then “bomb” them.
- The Shadowhunter relies on a whip and shurikens. He is a very dynamic class with a high skill ceiling, with one of his talent trees also geared towards stealth.
- The class “Cannoneer” is cute but deadly. She relies on a run-and-gun gameplay style and requires good aiming and awareness from the player.
- The Berserker is a classic melee fighter with two swords, gathering enemies around him and then dealing with them.
Further classes are planned for the future.
A selection of information that one could pick up from the stream:
- The characters all have their own “Devil” mode, in which they use different skills, which is developed separately from the actual char.
- There will be no holy trinity in Devilian.
- Currently, there is no controller support, but they will work on it.
- Events, such as fighting a world boss, will come with a kind of leaderboard: the more one does, the more one gets; just “running through and tagging” is thus not an option.
- The game is set to be released in English, French, and German.
In the coming weeks, we are told, we will learn much more about the individual systems and classes, which were often only briefly mentioned in the stream – such as the talisman system, PvP, titles, or achievements. A lot of information was obtained in that one-hour stream, and there were no further issues after the initial sound problem. Maybe it is indeed a good omen?
