There is a new quarterly update on Diablo 4. The new Game Director introduces himself, and there are new details about the sound design of the action RPG. Find out here on MeinMMO why innocent vegetables fell victim to the sound designers.
What’s in the quarterly update? A new quarterly update on the development of Blizzard’s upcoming action RPG Diablo 4 has recently been released. In it, the new head of the project – Joe Shely – introduces himself, and there are new details about the game’s sound design, including an exciting passage about how the disgusting blood, slime, and entrails effects were actually created.
New information on sound design and the new Game Director
What’s up with the disgusting sounds? Those who know Diablo games are aware that you don’t just face clean enemies like skeletons and stone creatures.
Moreover, it has always been quite appealing to fight against truly repulsive abominations. One particularly disgusting creature is the “Fly Host,” a bloated thing from which pests keep crawling out of its slimy openings.
These things make all sorts of disgusting, slimy, and smacking noises. But how does such a disgusting sound come together? Are the developers actually messing around with slaughterhouse waste or other disgusting stuff?
However, the truth is not as disgusting, because to simulate the sounds of slime, blood, and slopping guts, the developers merely had their way with innocent vegetables.
They smashed lettuce and melons and mixed them with mayonnaise, salsa sauce, and a 7-layer dip into a gross, stinky paste. With this slime, the developers could then mess around like little kids and create the disgusting noises emitted by the Fly Host and other nasty creatures in the game.
Diablo 4 gets cool sound and a new Game Director
Who is the new Game Director? Diablo 4 has a new head, who also briefly introduced himself in the quarterly update. His name is Joe Shely, and he has been with Blizzard since 2005. He was a designer for WoW, later a senior designer for Diablo 3, and was also involved in the StarCraft add-on Wings of Liberty. He has been part of the Diablo 4 team since 2017 and is looking forward to bringing the vision of Diablo 4 to life.
However, he didn’t say when that would be. He merely mentioned that there is “still a lot to do.”
What happened to the predecessor? Joe Shely succeeds Luis Barriga. The former Game Director of Diablo 4 was let go in August along with two other senior designers at Blizzard. All three were apparently involved in the sexism scandal at Blizzard.
