In Helldivers 2, players have always shown their respect in Over-Earth with emotes – even while flying through the air. Unfortunately, the latter has now been removed, although fans could often save themselves this way.
What was this feature? It involved performing an emote while flying through the air. Fans discovered this “feature” by chance during their battles and exploited it to their advantage. The advantage was that players could survive falls in most cases through the emote – fall damage was thus unintentionally reduced.
Why this was the case is unclear. However, we assume that emotes changed something about the hitboxes, allowing players to survive fatal falls. Unfortunately, this feature now belongs to the past.
Meme function is now history
What has Arrowhead changed? In the latest patch of Helldivers 2, Arrowhead removed the feature that allowed you to perform emotes anywhere and at any time. They revealed the following in the patch notes:
Emotes can no longer be triggered while in the air, ragdolling, or sliding. We are monitoring this change and look forward to your feedback!
There was no explanation given as to why the “feature” was removed. The team is monitoring the response to the change and will make adjustments if fans are unhappy.
It is possible that there were some issues related to the feature, or it simply did not make sense to perform a democratic emote while falling. As for community feedback, they are not pleased with the change.
What do the fans say about the change? They are not excited about the change at all. On Reddit, there is a post with 13,545 upvotes where fans lament their loss. The following comments can be heard:
- “Damn, why would Over-Earth do something like this?” – 4ManagedDemocracy
- “My feedback: I don’t like this change.” – 2183-52
- “This ‘feature’ was just fun; I don’t think it needed to be fixed or removed in any way. It was just there for fun.” – ku8i4
- “It was hilarious to express oneself while being mauled. There were also great videos. I would love to see it back.” – Scalpels
Users also offer a compromise. Arrowhead could offer special emotes that change the player’s behavior in such situations. Others may understand the developers’ intervention due to this exploit but hope to regain the feature – even without the damage reduction effect. Did you use the feature often, or are you hearing about it for the first time?
