Two of the group members from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 you might know from other video games – at least their voices. Initially, the developers had no idea who they were dealing with.
How can this be? As CEO Guillame Broche revealed in an interview with Pirate Software (via YouTube), his development studio conducts blind auditions. This means they select voice actors solely based on their voices for the characters in the video game.
Thus, neither appearance nor reputation decides who gets hired. What matters is the talent that the selected individuals must use to convince the development team. The team sifted through countless anonymous voices.
Broche explains that the studio did not know to whom the voice samples belonged that they had received. As fate would have it, two talented voice actors were cast who you know from Final Fantasy 16 and Baldur’s Gate 3.
Stars from Final Fantasy and Baldur’s Gate impress with talent
Who are the two voice actors? As Broche recounts, Jennifer English and Ben Starr impressed because they were good. He laughs and adds that it turned out they were quite big in the world of voice acting.
- Jennifer English voices Shadowheart in the English version. During the voice work, she learned to love her competition. In Clair Obscur, she voices Maelle.
- Ben Starr is the protagonist Clive Rosfield from the English version of Final Fantasy 16 and is even talented enough to sing in the soundtrack of Expedition 33. He voices Verso.
By the way, you will encounter Ben Starr once again as Prometheus in Hades II, which you should definitely play on Steam. Jennifer English is likely currently preparing for her role as protagonist Gwendolyn in Tides of Annihilation, which is set to release in 2026 on Steam.
Thanks to the fair selection process, the development team has come across 2 great talents who have already made a name for themselves in the voice acting world. However, despite their skills, the voice actors struggled with several words because they could not pronounce them correctly: 2 words that you constantly hear in online games are too difficult for the voice actors from Clair Obscur
