The “Overwatch Dad” Jeff Kaplan revealed new details about the development of Overwatch 2. Apparently, there is an interesting endgame – but it still needs to be “explored.”
This is what Kaplan says about Overwatch 2: In an interview with Edge Magazine (via gamesradar), Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan also talked about the endgame content of Overwatch 2. In one of his responses, he stated:
We have many experienced developers on our team who have created content for World of Warcraft and Diablo. The [endgame] is one of the challenges that we are excited to take on.
In the same interview, Kaplan discussed why Overwatch 2 will be a sequel and not just a DLC. The team is twice as large, and the game is significantly bigger. Consequently, the developers will likely place the focus on the content.
The endgame of Overwatch 2
What could the endgame look like? Kaplan has not yet revealed the exact contents. He merely stated that the team would “explore what endgame will mean for hero missions.”
This suggests that the PvE component will indeed comprise the core of the endgame in Overwatch 2. These missions will provide:
- A level system for heroes
- Hero and story missions for a deeper narrative
- An exclusive loot system
With WoW developers by their side, great stories and hero developments could be created, and Diablo veterans surely know a lot about loot – even though the loot system is supposed to look entirely different.
All these aspects are therefore suitable for being expanded for the endgame.
Why even have an endgame? As a competitive shooter, Overwatch 2 would not necessarily need huge content updates for the endgame. The predecessor Overwatch comes with new maps, new heroes, and events and remains popular.
However, the plans suggest that Overwatch 2 will focus not on the PvP aspect but on PvE content. As a “story shooter,” new stories would need to be consistently added to keep players engaged (similar to Destiny 2).
The story seems to take a special place, as Kaplan also briefly mentioned “movies” and “an animated series” to tell stories outside of the game. This aligns with the fact that before the announcement, writers for story content were being sought.
