Zenimax Online has given a little insight into what fans of the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online (PC, PS4, Xbox One) can expect after the current Skyrim story.
What have the developers of ESO said about the upcoming story? Of course, the team isn’t revealing any details yet on how the story of ESO will continue in 2021. However, Creative Director Rich Lambert managed to drop a few hints in an interview.
According to him, there are still many places that the developers can showcase. On the map of the continent Tamriel alone, there are areas that are not yet available in the MMORPG. And then there’s Oblivion…
There are places on the map that we have not yet visited. There are still a few areas we can explore. We also need to plan for the seemingly endless realms of Oblivion. So yes, there are many places we could be heading to.

Is it heading towards Oblivion?
What exactly is the hint? Rich Lambert explicitly mentions the nearly endless realms of Oblivion, the place where the Daedric Princes reign. Oblivion is a different dimension that can take on different forms depending on its ruler. Here, nothing is as it seems. Interesting places include the Shivering Isles or the Deadlands.
Oblivion would certainly allow for very exciting and unusual adventures. Some of the best quests in the Elder Scrolls series take place in this dimension.
Zenimax would have the opportunity to break free from common fantasy conventions and create completely crazy things. This could bring a lot of variety and make The Elder Scrolls Online something truly special.
However, it is unclear whether this will actually happen. Perhaps Rich Lambert merely mentioned Oblivion as an example.
We can definitely expect something new: Lambert further explained in the interview that the team is considering where to go next and is asking important questions:
- What have we not done yet?
- What have we not done in a long time?
- How can we make the next thing feel different?
These questions show that we can look forward to something different and new for the next story in the MMORPG, without vampires.
And Oblivion would fit perfectly here. While there have been excursions into this dimension before, an entire year-long story set there could really be unique and exciting.
What do you think? Would you like to experience a year-long story in Oblivion?
With the DLC Markarth, we are first expecting the end of the current Skyrim story in the MMORPG ESO. Mein-MMO author Jürgen Horn presents the upcoming content in an article.
