. The game director behind the game explains what he believes went wrong with Concord.
What happened to Concord? The biggest gaming flop of the year is probably Concord. The hero shooter allegedly cost Sony 250 million dollars, but failed miserably. Apparently, no one was interested in the new service game. The game was even shut down two weeks after its release.
Ironically, another hero shooter is currently quite successful. Marvel Rivals reached a player peak of over 480,000 users in its first week (via SteamDB). The reviews on Steam are currently at Mostly Positive
.
The game director of the game, Thaddeus Sasser, explained in a podcast why he believes Concord failed and why Marvel Rivals works.
Concord had nothing original according to him
What does Thaddeus Sasser say? Thaddeus Sasser is an industry veteran who has worked on various shooters like Battlefield Hardline, for instance. He is the game director for Marvel Rivals. In a podcast from Videogamer, he spoke before the release of the game about Marvel Rivals as well as about Concord.
Regarding Concord, he says that he believes the game had nothing original, which is why people wanted to switch to the game. There was no new incentive for Overwatch players.
In the podcast, he also praises the concept of Marvel Rivals, his own game. He believes that his game attracts people because it has the well-known superheroes as its concept. That is already a reason to try the game.
Also, the possibilities that the heroes have are, according to him, an aspect that could attract people. Subsequently, he continues: If we did our job well, they will love what they play, and they will want to play even more.
At least Marvel Rivals has already had quite a good start. But we have to wait and see if it is just initial euphoria or if players will stick with the new hero shooter for longer. For many, the game is currently even better than Overwatch 2. A former Blizzard chief even criticized Marvel Rivals, but also faced criticism himself: Former Blizzard chief calls Marvel Rivals an ‘Overwatch clone’, embarrassing himself in the process
