A developer explains in an interview that gaming PCs and PS5 Pro cannot be compared. This is not only due to the price, but also to the potential performance that both devices promise to the customer.
In a published interview at wccftech with developer Tower Five, Game Director Renaud Charpentier shared his impressions about Sony’s upcoming console, the PS5 Pro. The development studio is known for the strategy game Empire of the Ants.
In the conversation, he explained that the PS5 Pro and a gaming PC cannot really be compared. However, this does not stop many players from directly comparing the prices of gaming PCs and the PS5.
A PC costs 3 to 5 times as much, but games do not look much better than on the PS5 Pro
When he was asked in the interview how the PS5 Pro performs at maximum resolution compared to a gaming PC, he replied (via wccftech.com):
As stated and presented by Sony, it is expected that most games will double their frame rate on the Pro version or improve the quality of scenes when they are already running at 60 on the PS5. Nevertheless, PCs at maximum performance are “limitless”, so they will naturally be more powerful, but they cannot be compared.
A fully equipped PC easily costs 3 to 5 times as much and consumes 3 to 5 times the electrical energy. What is interesting, and says a lot about the flattening silicon development curve, is that your game on your monster PC does not look or play three to five times better than on a PS5 Pro console. The return on high-end silicon drops significantly, and this could affect the lifespan of console hardware.
Gaming PCs are not surprisingly more powerful than a PS5, as the performance is not capped upwards unlike a console. However, a monster PC
does not necessarily make the game look better than what the PS5 Pro achieves in the end.
He also draws another comparison with the PS4 Pro. He himself explains that the frame rate (FPS) will be doubled from the PS5 to the PS5 Pro, which is similar to the PS4 Pro. However, it is still too early to compare the performance of the PS5 Pro with games on the PS5.
According to Charpentier, PS5 games can at least make better use of the PS5 Pro hardware compared to PS4 Pro and PS4, due to the way games are developed nowadays compared to the previous generation.
