It has now been officially clarified why the mega puzzle from Destiny 2 reminded you so much of The Legend of Zelda.
Here’s how Zelda inspired Destiny: What do the Guardians from the MMO shooter Destiny 2 and the pointy hat-wearing Link from The Legend of Zelda have in common? They both have to wade through basically the same enchanted forest and solve puzzles to avoid being trapped there forever.
Anyone who felt exactly this sensation in the Corridors of Time and remembered the Lost Woods from Zelda did everything right.
Tom Farnsworth is, among other things, the lead designer for Season 11 and recently revealed on Twitter that the iconic Zelda level was the direct template for perhaps the largest Destiny puzzle to date.
This enchanted forest drove Destiny players crazy
This was the mega puzzle: In January 2020, the Corridors of Time had the Guardians firmly in their grip. It was necessary to navigate through a labyrinth of surreal rooms and corridors. Only those who knew the correct sequence could reach the goal.
There were several versions of the puzzle:
- Each Guardian could individually take different paths and options to find lore entries and ultimately even their own grave in a (parallel?) future.
- The entire community puzzled together for days about an overarching solution for the Corridors of Time. Bungie even had to send players to bed because they threatened to lose their minds.
In The Legend of Zelda, players have been familiar with this type of puzzle for decades. It’s always a foggy forest, and often after numerous attempts, a legendary sword awaits the brave hero – which, of course, couldn’t be missing in the Destiny version either.
Such a sword, waiting in a stone for the chosen one, was also already planned for the Dreaming City.
The hint of the Arthurian saga was meant to underline the fantasy theme of the locations – as Farnsworth noted via Twitter. But in the end, the quest for the exotic bow Wishender came out of it.
