The creator of Deadly Boss Mods, a popular addon for World of Warcraft, is on the brink. But players are immediately helping through the Patreon platform.
Anyone who visits dungeons or regularly goes on raids in World of Warcraft has surely heard of the interface addon “Deadly Boss Mods” – known as DBM. For many players, it is an essential extension without which they hardly would venture out.
However, the author of this addon is just one person and is entirely alone. And this person has been working around the clock on the addon. Now he has confessed his mental and physical state to the community.
What is Deadly Boss Mods? Deadly Boss Mods is an interface extension for World of Warcraft that helps many players. It enhances the game with timers and loud alerts whenever there is something to pay attention to.
For example, a warning appears
- when a boss casts a spell that you urgently need to interrupt
- or when the character needs to avoid an area effect.
Especially raiders in the current content benefit from DBM.
Especially for players who do not want to spend much time reading up on boss fights, Deadly Boss Mods is a great help. But even inherently inattentive players can become solid group mates with it.
Additionally, Deadly Boss Mods is also the addon that has been downloaded the most. For us, DBM was also one of the essential addons for Battle for Azeroth.
Who is the author? The author of the addon works under the name MysticalOS and is the only developer writing for the addon. To keep the addon up to date, he must devote nearly all of his free and working time to the project. In addition, he also cares for his 70-year-old mother, who can no longer manage many tasks on her own.
Moreover, MysticalOS cannot afford health insurance on his income and urgently needs to undergo a dental operation that he also cannot afford.
He also mentions that he literally has “no friends” – the work on the addon, which also includes constant mythic raiding, and taking care of his mother consumes all his time.
The community helps immediately: The long and moving post has had its effect. After just a few hours, the number of his supporters on Patreon increased from nearly 500 to over 1600. Although there are no exact figures, this is a monthly increase of at least $1100 – probably even significantly more.
Patreon supporters pay a monthly amount to support artists in creating something.
Meanwhile, 6 out of 7 funding goals have been reached, enabling MysticalOS to hire a second developer full-time and finally buy a new PC so he “no longer has to develop and test on a toaster”.
However, there are also voices in the community that advise against helping MysticalOS. In his post, he revealed that his “life has significantly spiraled out of control” and that anyone donating money would only be supporting this unhealthy lifestyle.
However, most players see it differently and believe that with a clearly regulated income through Patreon, much of the pressure and stress will lift off MysticalOS, and that this is a positive development. With another developer to assist, he can also spend more time on other things and finally maintain social contacts again.
If you use Deadly Boss Mods yourself and want to support the developer, you can do this through his Patreon page.
What do you think of this story? Is it great that the community reacted so solidarity and helps an addon developer who has been an essential part of WoW for over 10 years?
