You often see in the Star Wars films how Chewbacca tilts his head to the side. This habit of the character originates from the actor Peter Mayhew.
Chewbacca, also known as Chewie, is the famous Wookiee who made his film debut in Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. As a loyal companion and co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon, he stands by Han Solo.
In five Star Wars films, the character was played by Peter Mayhew until he passed away from a heart attack in 2019. Subsequently, Joonas Suotamo took over the role of Chewbacca in the newer Star Wars productions.
However, a certain habit of the original actor has since become an integral part of the well-known film character Chewbacca.

What particular trait are we talking about? When you watch the Star Wars films, you often see Chewbacca tilting his head to the side.
Often, this signals that the Wookiee understands what has been said, for example in communication with Han Solo.
This movement stemmed from Peter Mayhew having difficulties on set due to his height. The actor often had to tilt his head under obstacles like door frames to avoid bumping into them. The various sets commissioned by George Lucas were usually simply too low for tall individuals like him.
What was originally a movement that came from the actor’s working life was simply integrated into the character of his figure.
