In the MMO shooter Destiny, fans have long criticized the story. Can Bungie improve it with the new DLC “House of Wolves”?
Bungie had many press and YouTubers as guests. They showed them Trials of Osiris, the new Strike and the fresh “Prison of Elders“, but little of the story. The story has always been one of the main points of criticism about the game. Although the current story is quite liked by philosophers.
At Gamespot, they spoke with Matt Sammons, a Senior Designer (the bearded gentleman from the stream yesterday), and the Creative Director James Barrett also had his say (he was in the first stream). They explain Bungie’s plans regarding the story.
The Essentials of Bungie’s Story Plans for House of Wolves at a Glance
- They want to tell a clear, cohesive, simple story with “House of Wolves”
- There will be new Grimoire cards
- There will be two main storylines: one being the Hunt for Skolas, the leader of the treacherous House of Wolves. The Hunt will be driven by quests
On the other hand, players are to go on a “Bounty Hunt” after notable representatives of the Fallen who are scattered everywhere. This will be driven by bounties. Players are to act like bounty hunters. Bounties from Petra Venj will send the players on this hunt.

Could the story of House of Wolves continue in the summer?
My MMO thinks: As we understand and read from the interview, the story will continue to be told as it has been so far: through comments from the merchants, through quest texts, and also through Grimoire cards. There likely won’t be the “revolution” that some expect. Instead, they are focusing on small improvements to the existing method. Bungie doesn’t say it this way, but there is a lot pointing to the fact that this is how it will be.
It’s surprising that Bungie doesn’t mention the Queen and her brother at all but brings Variks and Petra Venj to the forefront. It seemed clear that the Queen would be the focus of the story, even after the trailer.
In the first stream, DeeJ was asked about this and he responded as usual evasively. She is certainly safe. It will show when the time comes.
Perhaps this time they will continue the story “in a later free patch” so the game doesn’t stay so “stagnant” for so long as between December and May. That might align with claims that Bungie also wants to deliver “robust content” in the summer. But at the moment, this is just speculation.
