Is the MMO shooter Destiny coming for PC? A job advertisement gives hope that a PC version could be released.
We dealt with the question of whether Destiny would be coming to PC in February 2015. For us, it was clear: If it happens, it would have to be at a “turning point” in Destiny. Not just “in the middle of it,” but at a time when everyone would be starting anew.
The first possibility we considered likely was September 2015 and the first major expansion. Back then, we still called it “Comet.” Today we know: September 2015 was right, turning point was also right, but the expansion will be called “King of the Taken”. And there is no trace of the PC version, not even a faint one. There is still no release date.
Since June 2014, neither Bungie nor Activision has used the words PC and Destiny together in a sentence. However, back then it was said that the thought was close, one could imagine it, but there were concerns that it could become too many platforms.
Next Exit Destiny 2
The next exit would then be “Destiny 2″ – maybe in September 2016. That would probably be the “earliest time” one could expect a PC version to be released and offered for sale.
Now there is at least a faint sign of life that such a scenario could really become a reality. On Bungie’s job page, the developers behind Destiny are looking for an expert in PC compatibility. Many observers consider this an indication that Bungie is working on a PC port. Although some may wish for it to happen. Nothing is confirmed at this time.
Of course, it is also unrealistic to believe they hire someone and the PC port happens in the same minute.
Does it depend on whether to continue supporting Xbox 360 and Playstation 3?
A PC port could depend on whether a confirmed Destiny 2 would continue to be developed for last-gen consoles Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, or if they say: Destiny 2 will then “only” be released for PS4, Xbox One, and (maybe) Windows PC. Then at least the problem with the many platforms would be solved.
My MMO thinks: The job postings can serve as an indication of what many have thought since 2014: Activision is definitely interested in a PC version of Destiny and has never ruled it out. Why not? It would certainly bring in a lot of money.
However, a game that still runs today on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and a high-end PC might not work. Competitors like The Division are only appearing on current-gen consoles and PC.
A game that runs on PS4, Xbox One, and PC is therefore quite an option. The strange thing about this speculation: Even if it is true, we will likely hear nothing about a PC port for a long, long time. Microsoft and Sony certainly want to use Destiny as an incentive for the sales of their consoles. If it were known that Destiny would eventually come to PC, the purchase incentive for players hovering around a console, but still hesitating, could decrease.
