In Destiny, Bungie talks about the possibilities of telling stories and lore through characters. Xur and the Cryptarch are highly regarded.
Do you remember the time when Cayde-6 was not much more than a rather insignificant NPC in the Hall of Guardians, from which you might have bought items once or twice?
Since Year 2, since “The Taken King”, we know him better. He plays a crucial role in the quest line where we learn about his character and a bit of his story. Since then, he has been the friend of every Guardian, and some might still smile when they see him today. The soulless NPC has become a character full of life. With the upcoming “Rise of Iron” expansion, we will learn the stories and backstories of additional characters, of which we have only sparse information so far. At the center will be Lord Saladin, whom we all know from the Iron Banner PvP event.
But what about other NPCs that we regularly encounter in Destiny?
Bungie on Xur and the Cryptarch
Executive Producer Scott Taylor sees numerous opportunities to tell stories about the characters when he looks at the Destiny universe. He specifically addresses the Cryptarch and Xur:
We don’t know much about them, but they are cool characters. I’m curious about them. I want to know more about the Cryptarch. He seems shady. What’s up with Xur?
He says that Bungie is always trying to create such storytelling opportunities that Guardians can dive into with expansions. The new Social Space, Felwinter Peak, will introduce more characters, from which we hope will also spark the community’s curiosity.
We will learn a lot about Lord Saladin this fall, Taylor confirmed again. However, it seems that we will have to wait longer for the story and lore about Xur and the Cryptarch. But Bungie is aware that we want to learn more about these NPCs. Xur has been a mystery for a long time, which Guardians love to speculate about.
