Unknown cutscenes featuring the Vex have surfaced in Destiny. What is going on?
A video has recently circulated in the community that apparently shows a trailer featuring previously unknown scenes of the Vex. It spread on both reddit and YouTube, gaining prominence especially through Unknown Player.
The video is a cinematic montage by Prologue Films. Prologue Films previously delivered the prologue video for Destiny, the intros for “Darkness Awaits” and “House of Wolves”, as well as cinematics for “King of the Taken”.
The circulating video shows a compilation of these cinematic cutscenes. It features scenes of Vex that are not previously known:
What is the significance of these scenes?
This video was allegedly published on Vimeo six months ago, but it has since been taken down. The embedded YouTube video above is a copy of it, albeit with audio issues, it at least shows the footage.
Visible is a Vex Goblin emerging from the water (around 0:31), a previously unknown location believed to be the homeland of the Vex (0:35), and a scene in which a Vex appears to be created (1:13). At 1:41, a Vex is seen briefly again. (Note: Timestamps refer to the video above).
These cutscenes are not in the game, raising the question of where they come from. Three theories from the community:
- They are scenes from Vanilla Destiny that never made their way into the MMO shooter. They relate to the Glass Chamber and the “story” involving the Vex. However, it is unclear why Bungie would have removed them. Thus, this theory is unlikely.
- This theory has the most supporters: They are scenes from the originally planned DLC Vex-Void. A leaked Destiny roadmap showed that after “King of the Taken” (then still called Comet), a Vex DLC titled Vex-Void was planned:
However, we now know that these plans were scrapped, and that “Vex-Void” and “Forge of Gods” fell victim to restructuring. Instead, “Rise of Iron” came, and in 2017 “Destiny 2” is on the horizon.
Whether these scenes originate from “Vex-Void” remains pure speculation. Bungie has never talked about these original post-TTK plans.
- There is also the theory that we are already seeing scenes from “Destiny 2”. That, contrary to the Cabal coming, as multiple rumors suggest, it is the Vex who will surprise the Guardians. This may be the reason why the Vimeo video was taken down again.
Who knows, maybe we will eventually see these scenes in the game. Nothing is yet known about the upcoming spring update…
