Here’s how the rumor goes: Bungie officially stated that Xur will never sell the Gjallarhorn again. It would ruin the entire balance if everyone had it. Therefore, it is impossible for him to sell the Gjallarhorn.
Here’s how the rumor started: Last year, a person on Twitter began impersonating a Bungie employee. He started tweeting things like, “I was in a hard conference today again! It was about what Xur will bring on Friday!” The account quickly became popular, gaining followers and influence. In mid-January, this led to a “Q&A session” on a website, where he said among other things: Xur will never bring the Gjallarhorn or the Icebreaker.
This statement was adopted by a well-known Korean “sensational site” that is after clicks and largely disregards such a concept as “truth,” and presented it as an official statement. From there, the rumor spread and is believed to this day.
Here’s why the rumor seems plausible: Xur indeed has not sold the Gjallarhorn since the second time he appeared. And the weapon is so powerful and so desired that it would truly throw the balance off. And if it could just be bought, it would likely take away the last reason for many players to still play Destiny.
Here’s why the rumor is nonsense: Bungie has never heard of the “alleged employee.” And in the week when he said Xur would never sell Icebreaker or Gjallarhorn again, Xur sold the Icebreaker and made record revenue – that was on January 16. Tough luck.
The rumor, therefore, has no basis: Bungie has never commented on whether Xur will not sell the Gjallarhorn anymore. But on the other hand, he has not sold it anymore, so the rumor will likely be believed and passed on until one fine Friday it is on display at Old Noodleface. Even though the rumor itself is demonstrably complete nonsense.
