“The Taken King” introduced swords as heavy weapons – a class of weapons that allows you to dive directly into close combat. Before that, one could only engage with the blade in the “Sword of Crota” mission or as a sword bearer in the Crota raid and get a sense of how swords feel in the hands of a Guardian. However, it was only a temporary pleasure.
Upon TTK’s launch, you could choose legendary swords and then complete an extensive quest to obtain an Exotic sword:Reclamer, Rebellion or Darkdrinker. These come with unique perks that influenced the playstyle of many Guardians.
Even today, the Exotic swords are often used as they deal massive amounts of damage. Aksis has been defeated in record times with them.
