In Year 1 of Destiny, there were constant complaints that the MMO shooter felt like a treadmill, where players were doing the same tasks over and over, and nothing really new or exciting happened.
Therefore, it was a big surprise when in September 2015, out of nowhere, a new Exotic was discovered: The Black Spindle.
The Black Spindle was not tied to an elaborate quest that could be completed to earn the Exotic. Instead, the mission “Lost to Light” had to be active as a daily story mission. Then, one could enter a new area in the mission, defeat enemies, and finally collect the Spindle as loot.
Such a “secret” tied to a daily mission was not something the Guardians were prepared for, which sparked a real gold rush. From then on, all missions were meticulously examined if they were marked as “Daily”. Suddenly, even the story missions became exciting and thrilling again.
In the weeks and months after the launch of “The Taken King”, the community fell into a frenzy: Secrets were suspected everywhere, every stone was turned over.
