The Last Word – Shot from the hip
The Last Word is an exotic hand cannon that was unrivaled in the first months after launch. Only the Fate Moon could compete on PlayStation. Especially in the crucible, it was feared and consistently ranked among the top spots in surveys. And this went on for months. Even a balance patch that limited its range couldn’t end the cult that quickly grew around the weapon.
The special feature of The Last Word was the only playstyle it demanded from the Guardians. The hand cannon only unleashed its full potential when fired “from the hip”. It could be operated in fully automatic mode and had such penetration power that The Last Word often emerged as the victor in 1v1 encounters.
However, not everyone got along with the weapon: Due to the small magazine, shots had to hit as otherwise the magazine would quickly be emptied. With some practice, Guardians acted like gunslingers in the Wild West, as seen in Hollywood movies, and could swiftly mow down enemies.
Playing with hand cannons was and still isn’t everyone’s favorite. However, The Last Word offered an attractive play style that was also incredibly successful. This exotic hand cannon, however, faced the same fate as many other “over weapons”: it has now lost much of its power.
