In the MMO shooter Destiny, exotic weapons have a cult status, and fans want to bring the pixelated versions from the future to Earth and our present.
At first, the exotic weapons came from 3D printers, some were even brought into our world by a clever YouTuber using Lego bricks, but this is something new: A talented Reddit user has carved the “No Land Beyond”, the retro sniper rifle, from a good piece of wood.
To do this, he printed the template, found a suitable piece of wood, and then got to work. The artist took two weeks to complete it. The result looks outstanding and weighs under 2.5 kilos. He wasn’t completely inexperienced with the “No Land Beyond”; he already had experience with replicas of weapons from Legends of Zelda and Skyrim.
And for those wondering why there is no trigger on the “No Land Beyond”: It’s better to leave it out in the USA if you don’t want to run into legal issues. He has heard horror stories from conventions, he says.
The response to the carving is very positive. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the exotic sniper rifle “No Land Beyond” in Destiny. It performed disastrously in polls and is considered one of the worst weapons in the game. In fact, it is so bad that it inspires some to achieve remarkable feats, either in PvE (one player soloed the Crota’s End raid with it) or in the Crucible:
So there were also some remarks made. “Why are you building that? I just saw a 1:1 copy of the weapon on my way to work. Made from a single piece of metal!”, said another user and posted the picture of a full trash can.
The “No Land Beyond” in Destiny is itself a replica and is modeled after the rifle of the Russian sniper Vasily Zaitsev. He became famous during World War II and especially in the Battle of Stalingrad. The name of the sniper rifle derives from his quote “There is no land for us beyond the Volga.” This sentence is also on Zaitsev’s grave. The film “Duel – Enemy at the Gates” tells his fictionalized story.
