In Destiny, the new expansion “The Taken King” has been introduced. In an interview, more details were revealed. Important for fans: there will be a raid.
After the presentation of Destiny at the Sony press conference with the new trailer for “The Taken King”, Destiny developers had a direct interview last night. We summarize the most important information for you:
- The new expansion is said to be “big” and have “a lot of substance”. There will be plenty to explore and it will open a new chapter in Destiny, beginning “Year Two”. Players who have already played a lot of Destiny will have plenty of reasons to return.
- There will probably also be “crazy” new PvP modes. In Mayhem, for example, supers will always be active. In another mode, there will be specific “tasks” to complete. Whether this will actually happen or is just for demonstration purposes will be seen. The Mayhem mode actually sounds too crazy to be true. But maybe that is exactly the plan.
- In the story, it picks up where “Darkness Awaits” left off, the victory over Crota has triggered mechanisms and now summoned “Oryx”, the new major villain.
- They promise a story with a clear focus. They continue to build on “personalities” that have been developed. They have been successful with Eris Morn, Variks, and Petra Venj. It seems players are embracing this. They want to continue on this path.
- Players are particularly excited about the new supers. They put effort into making them as cool as possible. Even Bungie is quite excited about them.
- With the Dreadnought, Oryx’s ship, comes a new “goal” for Destiny. The developers describe it as a “fortress filled with treasures” that players want to conquer in a campaign.
- The new enemies, the Taken, will have different abilities than their original counterparts. They will also haunt the “old” areas of Destiny.
- There will be a new raid, and it is said to be the largest that has ever been developed.
- The relatively inexpensive “60 bucks for everything” offer is made to keep players together. So players will not be excluded from content, but have a common foundation.

First Reactions: Supers are well received, pricing policy is not
Mein MMO thinks: It is not clear from the interview whether the “new goal” is the raid. It sounded more like it was a “new zone” where players would complete story missions.
There are indications that this time there will also be “recycled” content. Many of the Taken will likely be variations of already known enemies. Even if they say that they need to be “approached anew”, it leaves a certain aftertaste. This is one of the main criticisms of Destiny so far: there is not enough new content, we only receive variants of “already known.” This criticism seems likely to persist.
One thing has already worked out, the new “supers” are really well received. On Reddit, the topic of the day was “I absolutely need another Titan before the expansion” – that was the topic and the discussion about the new Collector’s Edition, which is aimed at new customers, not “existing fans.” This pricing discussion dominated not only the comment section under our article on the topic but also that of the large Destiny subreddit.
The Most Important Questions about the New Expansion in Destiny
We will probably receive more details about “The Taken King” as soon as tomorrow. Many questions are still open:
- What is the new max level?
- Will we be able to reuse items from the “first year”?
- How many new quests, strikes, and PvP maps will there be?
- Will there really be a new zone, perhaps a new planet?
- And how much will really be “new” this time?
But there is still time until September 15 to clarify all the details. As we know Bungie, they won’t leave out everything.
