For the launch of “The Rise of Iron Lords”, all Guardians on PS4 and Xbox One will be able to create and play private matches in Destiny . We summarize the information.
In the Bungie livestream for Gamescom 2016 it was indeed confirmed: Private Matches are coming to the Destiny universe. Many Guardians have wished for this feature for quite some time, as it opens the door to a more extensive PvP experience and takes Destiny to a new level – eSports suddenly becomes conceivable.
Lord Shaxx hands you the keys to the Crucible, so you now have control over how you want to utilize the PvP area.
Create Private Matches – These are the options you have
You can only create your own games on PS4 and Xbox One in the fall. To do this, you open a private lobby. The fireteam leader selects the Crucible in the orbit and then clicks on the “Private Match” node. He can now set the match options in the game settings.
Game options for Private Matches and Custom Games
Although changes may still occur before the release of “RoI” on September 20, these are currently the possible presets:
- Game type: Here you choose which Crucible mode you want to play. If you want to play Supremacy, all participants need “Rise of Iron”.

- Map: Now you choose the map on which the fun will take place. If you want to play on Floating Gardens, Icarus, Last Exit, and Skyline, you need RoI. Sector 618 and Icarus are only selectable on PlayStation 4.

- Score limit: Here you decide how many points a team must reach to win the match. Once a team has won, you return to orbit. If you previously selected the elimination mode, you can determine here how many wins a team needs for the overall victory.
- Time limit: To ensure the games don’t take too long, you can also set a time limit. If no team reaches the required points within this time, the game ends prematurely.
- Light Level: Here you can specify whether level advantages should be considered or not.
Map settings:
- Time of day: Set the time of day on the map.
- Vehicles: Here you specify whether vehicles will be present on a map or not. However, vehicles are not possible on all maps.
Now you can press start and the game begins.
Switching Teams
In private matches, you can switch between the Alpha and Bravo teams at will. You can do this already in orbit or during the game.
- To switch teams in orbit: Press L1/R1 (PS4) or LB/RB (Xbox One).
- In the match: Here the process takes place in navigation mode (touchpad on PS4, view button on Xbox One).
When both teams are full, you can only switch teams if a player from the other team also wants to switch. You have a window of 15 seconds to execute the switch simultaneously. If you do this during a game, you die immediately and lose all your personal points. However, your contribution to the total score does not expire.
More info about Private Matches:
- Rewards: After the games, you can earn rewards. However, these are only of the quality level “Rare”. Legendary and exotic items cannot drop. Three of the coins have no use in private matches and will not be consumed.
- Heavy ammo: Regardless of how many rounds you choose in elimination for the overall victory, heavy ammo always spawns after the third win.
- Progress and Reputation: In private matches, you can complete daily Crucible bounties and perform test weapons from the gunsmith. Weekly bounties, quests, or the record book are not affected by private matches. After each game, you receive 30 Crucible reputation. With the “Crucible Champion” perk, you can increase this, which you find on some class items. Reputation boosters, however, have no effect. You earn Glimmer and weapon XP.

- Teams: A maximum of 12 players can participate. A team cannot have more than 6 players. Unbalanced matches are possible (e.g. 5 against 2). You can also start a private game alone and explore the map at your leisure.
- Maps: You can play any game mode on any map.
- You can choose between a team and a fireteam voice channel. You can find information about this on the Bungie site.
- Clans play a more important role. The clan of the fireteam leader who creates the game lobby will be displayed at the top left of the screen as the host. If you are not in a clan, it will say “No Clan Membership”.
- If you want to host not just casual games but public tournaments with prizes, there are some basic rules to follow, which you can study here.
Rise of Iron is not required for private matches – only for certain maps and the Supremacy mode. However, you need a PS4 or Xbox One.
What will you do with this new feature?
