In Destiny , Mara Sov is the Queen of the Awoken. Is she still alive?
Warning: The title is self-explanatory. However, the text may contain spoilers, certainly for the story up to that point, and there are also hints at the at least planned development surrounding the queen. Though it is not guaranteed that it will actually happen.
Mara Sov seemingly met her end in a spectacular cutscene early on in “The Taken King” when the ship she was on, fighting against Oryx, was destroyed by a wave of energy.
In Hollywood movies and series, it is said: As long as you don’t see a corpse, she is not dead. Fans are therefore speculating: Is Mara Sov still alive? Or should one of the most exciting characters in the Destiny universe have already met her demise?
Last week, there was a live stream by Bungie. There, they had Kirsten Potter as a guest, the actress playing Mara Sov.
Mara Sov bows to no one!
In the conversation with her, it became clear that the queen will still play a significant role in the story of Destiny and is supposed to undergo a longer development. They initially wanted Potter to portray a “tough pirate chick” with weapons, physically and combat-wise. Potter herself describes this as “sassy.” She felt comfortable in the role.
The heavily pregnant actress knocked her colleague out during an early rehearsal with a powerful belly push and then blamed it on the baby. The fetus must have reacted.
By the way, Potter thinks that the filming and the intense physical strain could have triggered contractions. She took it easy, as her husband works as an emergency physician in the area. If the contractions had started, they would have called 911 – and then Dad would have been there for the birth, the actress jokes.
Potter’s favorite quote from the queen is: “Mara Sov bows to no one – Mara Sov beugt sich niemandem.”

There are still big plans for the queen
After a longer hiatus (probably when they rewrote the story), they invited her back to Bungie and told her there was a change in the plans.
Mara Sov is now supposed to be portrayed in the new version as softer, more feminine, vulnerable, and somewhat ethereal. Potter then said that this wasn’t her forte and offered the Bungie people names of actresses who would be better suited for a “soft female role” than she. After this meeting, she had already feared: “Well, great. Now I’ve talked myself out of the coolest job of my career.”
Then they explained to her at Bungie the plan for her character. It is a journey. She is supposed to start out more feminine and soft, only to then become the tough pirate queen they initially envisioned.
In the stream, the story lead later mentioned that these are plans revealed here that might apply for a Destiny in 2020.
However, they do not want this to be understood as confirmation that Mara Sov is still alive. After a clip interruption, the story lead then seemed to say: Or she’s just dead now? Or maybe not? Who knows?
But to those who watched the stream, the impression is pushed that: The story of Mara Sov, the queen of the Reef, is far from over in Destiny. This was just the beginning.
