The MMO shooter Destiny is recruiting new people. Over 70 positions are open. Now they are bringing in Jerry Ryan, an experienced author in the MMO genre, as a “Lore-Master” to significantly shape the world of Destiny.
There are still many rumors about why Destiny has become what it is now: a game that has much but no in-game story. Since John Staten, the head writer, left in September 2013, there seems to have been a gap in story development. Staten was the one who portrayed a very different Destiny, which was more of a grand adventure, a space opera with endless expanses and a dense story, rather than the addictive lobby shooter we know Destiny as. And Staten was also the one who shaped the Halo franchise.
Even today, there are signs in the history of Destiny of how the game could have been; individual puzzle pieces clearly show hints of how they belong together, they just need someone to push them.
The remaining “I don’t have time to explain why I don’t have time to explain” story snippets in the game have faced quite a bit of mockery since the release. But perhaps this will change with the next DLC or expansion.
The chances for this have now improved. With Jerry Ryan, Bungie has made a catch. Ryan worked as a writer at ArenaNet on Guild Wars 2 for 5 years. He will become the “Lore-Master” and editor of Destiny, which means he will have the authority to ensure that the world is coherent.
It can be assumed that Ryan will not be the only one switching to Bungie in the coming weeks and months. Currently, there are 71 positions open on the Bungie careers page, including a job for a lead writer.
