In Destiny, there are different versions of the same exotic armor, which only differ in the height of their value in Strength, Intellect, or Discipline.
At first glance, exotic armors of the same type look identical: they have exactly the same stats, reach the same light level, and the armor value is also the same, as is the skin. However, there is one difference: they display different values in Strength, Discipline, or Intellect. And with that, a few extra percent of performance can be achieved.
Differences Can Be Significant
A few weeks ago, the Titan boots “Type 44. Offside” were available twice in a row from Xur. In the first week, they had 112 Strength, in the next week, 134. The same goes for Hunters: first the “Don’t Touch Me”-gloves with 76 Discipline on offer, and in the following week: the same parts with 104 Discipline. And the Warlocks with their Starfire Protocol rains in the last weeks? Their chest armor fluctuated between 128 and 144 Intellect.

It is clear that players should prefer a “high” value, as this table still applies:
How much do the different values contribute?
The magic value that Guardians must aim for is 272. At this value, one receives a 100% bonus for the respective stat. Beyond this value, further points provide no additional benefit.
- Those who reach 272 Intellect will get their Super back every 3:55 minutes instead of every 5:30. The Super meter fills up twice as fast with kills.
- With 272 Discipline, a Guardian throws their grenades every 27 seconds instead of just every minute.
- With 272 Strength, a player achieves the full 100% bonus, reducing the cooldown from 69 seconds to just 31 seconds.
Just today, with the possibility to upgrade armors at Xur, it is therefore important to know how strong your own armors are. Is a value of 120 on a chest armor good or bad? And how would 120 on a helmet be?
How High Do Exotic Armors Go Now After Darkness Lurks?
The maximum values that exotic armor pieces could reach when fully upgraded, were relatively clear before the DLC “Darkness Lurks”, although not officially communicated by Bungie but determined by the community. Now a Reddit user has sat down and calculated the likely maximum values from many submissions:
- For Helmets, the maximum value seems to be around 128. Before Darkness Lurks, it was at 118.
- For Chest Armors, the highest value seems to be an impressive 170. Before, the highest was at 157.
- For Gloves, the highest value seems to be 113. That’s 9 more than 104 before Darkness Lurks.
- For Boots, there are still relatively few comparative values, as there are only two exotic pairs. The highest seen was 157 at Xur. So extremely high.
Obsidian Will and the Claws of the Terrible Ahamkara – Split Stats
There are also special cases, which are two exotic items with two stats on them. Here, the Reddit user has determined the following values:
- For the helmet Obsidian Will, the highest could be 2 times 73, which would be 146 value points, significantly more than a “normal” helmet. The second split helmet, ATS/8 Arachnid, is likely to have these values as well.
- For the Claws of Ahamkara, the values could be at 2 times 64, which is 128 – also significantly more than the 113 for other gloves.
These are all unofficial data, so there is no guarantee that perhaps higher values are somewhere out there. However, it all seems well-founded.
