In the MMO shooter Destiny , the new expansion “The Taken King” starts tomorrow, the fresh add-on. We have summarized the most important questions.
It kicks off at 11:00 AM. The Taken King starts. We have extensively reported on it over the past weeks and months. But surely there are readers who are only now really interested in what’s going on. For them, we want to summarize the important information.
To do this, we use the popular fake interview format. We act as if someone is asking us questions who probably stopped playing Destiny after about 3 months because they just never got the raid boots from “The Vault of Glass”.
I haven’t played Destiny in a while. What is the most important thing I should know when I start tomorrow?
You now level up through experience points all the way to level 40. This is a new system. All the time, you leveled up to level 20 through experience and then through gear all the way to now level 34. That system is disappearing. Now anyone can level from 1 to 40 through experience points.
Do I start at level 20 then?
No, probably not. Everyone will receive the level they could achieve with the gear they have according to the old system as their light level tomorrow. And everyone can promote a hero to level 25 via an item they have in their mailbox. So you start at level 29.
Aaah, don’t remind me of that.
Sorry.
So light doesn’t matter anymore?
Yes, light is now calculated from the average of the defense value and the armor value of the gear. This results in the new light level. It still serves as a measure of how strong your Guardian is. And it also directly influences what enemies you can deal damage to and how much damage you take.
Slow down. I really haven’t played in a long time.
With a low light level, you simply won’t deal damage to strong enemies. Class items, artifacts, and ghost shells come in as new items that also have values. You should always grab the item with the higher main values to gradually increase your light level.
Sounds complicated! I’ll have to check that out more closely tomorrow.
That’s a good idea. You can also walk around the Tower; a lot has changed there too. But nothing crazy important. Maybe that the gunsmith now also has his own quests and now there are laptops hanging everywhere with item collections in them, nothing else.
What?!
Not that important. You’ll see everything tomorrow. By the way, there’s now a “smart loot system” that figures out what you need. And you should get that more often – like boots if you don’t have any.
…
Sorry. Oh, and the vault is much larger than before.
Hey, that guy with the flame hammer! What’s that?
That’s one of the three new subclasses. The flame hammer guy belongs to the Titan. The Warlock gets a kind of floating lightning god, and the Hunter gets a bow.
And I can just do that starting tomorrow?
No, you will unlock the respective subclasses through a quest. But that should be possible fairly early on.
Quest?
Yes, everything has now become a quest. It’s a new idea they have. Even things that were already in the game are now restructured into quests. The vendors who used to just stand around in the Tower are now supposed to have personalities, assign tasks, and interact more with the player. They now always want to tell the player what they can do next to become stronger.
And who is this Oryx?
The new Crota. Actually, Crota’s father.
And who is Crota?
War – Who was Crota? The final boss in the second raid.
So someone like Atheon?
Exactly. Oryx is coming now and wants to kill the Guardian who killed his son. That’s you, by the way. And to do that, he changes the aliens in Destiny and transforms them into slightly different aliens with new abilities, different colors, and makes everything a bit scarier.
Is there a new raid for 6 players? I always liked that the most … except for the thing with the boots.
Now you started it. The new raid is supposed to be called King’s Fall and to be pretty good. It starts on Friday evening. By the way, we know very little about it. A new public event has been extensively showcased “Court of Oryx”, but nothing has been said about the raid yet.
New exotics?
13 weapons and 18 armors.
Is that all?
Probably yes for the armors, but for the weapons we don’t know for sure. A few are still missing, which have already been introduced, like a heavy fusion rifle that can ricochet lasers all over the place.
And will they be available again from Xur?
The armors – yes. For the weapons, only a few; most will be obtained through quests. Similar to how it was with the Thorn before. Everything you get from Xur can then also be found randomly in Taken King activities.
So does Xur still play a role?
Yes, of course. We don’t know the new processes super precisely yet. But it seems like almost everything with Don Calamari remains the same. He continues to sell exotic weapons and armors. Oh, and he now sells a new item that can increase your chances of drops from bosses.
Are there still Strikes?
Yes, new ones are coming. Not much is changing. It should be a bit more varied, and the bosses should be able to do more than just have a long HP bar, but otherwise not much happens. The Nightfall is supposed to be a little different than before. There’s no reputation bonus anymore, but you also don’t have to start from scratch if you die. And the latest news is that an item has been found in the database that will allow you to do the Nightfall Strike twice a week, but whether that actually happens… we don’t know yet.
And what about PvP? Is it worth it now?
It’s been worth it for a while now. They have significantly increased the rewards. In the meantime, a new 3v3 event called Trials of Osiris has come out, which was well received. Iron Banner continues as well. But both of these will be paused for a while and then come back later. With the Taken King itself, there are now three fresh modes: These have already been tested for a week and were well received. More like fun modes, a bit of variety.
Is it still lagging as badly as before?
I’m afraid so.
What about the Gjallarhorn?
Yes… no. You have to be very strong now.
I never got it anyway.
Okay, then that’s not a problem. The exotics from the first year… you can still use them all. However, there aren’t “Year 2” versions of all of them. And the “Year 1” versions will be about half as strong as the Year 2 versions.
How do I obtain the Year 2 versions?
You can extract them from the collection if you have the Year 1 version. You’ll see tomorrow.
But raid armor to become level 40… I don’t need that anymore?
No, there will probably be raid armor again, but it doesn’t have anything to do with the experience level anymore.
What about the “Fate of All Fools?” Is it available now? I remember there was something with that sick guy?
Interestingly no, and it probably will never exist. It seems that the stats have been merged into the new PlayStation-exclusive weapon “Jade Rabbit”. And its look will sport a new pulse rifle called “No Time to Explain”.
Speaking of “No Time to Explain” – is there a storyline this time?
At least that’s what they promise. It’s also gotten better in the last DLCs; the stories were clearer and more logical than before but very short. Now there’s supposed to be some real substance.
What else do I need to know?
The weapon balance has completely changed since last week. The new hot currency is “Legendary Marks”, which you need for everything. And you can now simply go to one of the faction types and say, “I fight for you,” without needing to carry a specific item anymore.
What else? Spill it!
So, if you want to know more, then check out our Destiny page. I’m not going to tell you all the nonsense again.
You son of a Xur!
Oh, come on. Go look for boots! By the way, tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM we will embed a live stream of the first few hours in Destiny Year 2. You can definitely pick up a trick or two.
