Destiny: The Ghost is Excellent and Confuses Everyone

The voice actor Nolan North, the voice of the ghost in Destiny, received an award and then confused everyone.

Nolan North is the voice of the “ghost” in the English Destiny. He replaced Peter Dinklage (Tyrion from Game of Thrones) with “King of the Taken.” North is a prominent voice actor and received an award for his performance in Uncharted at the Game Awards yesterday. North has been voicing Nathan Drake since 2007.

When he received the award, North gave a thank-you speech that has since been discussed. He quoted the motto under which a protest of voice actors is running: “Performance matters” and then said that it is true. But it also applies to the designers, programmers, and artists at Naughty Dog (Uncharted). Each of them works hard. Their performance is important, even more important than his, because without their performance, his would not exist.

It is not quite clear whether North criticized the “voice actor” strike with that, in the sense of “Don’t be so dramatic.” Voice actors for video games are fighting for better working conditions. Many should have already dubbed games and didn’t even know exactly what they were doing. Participation in the success also seems to leave much to be desired.

The other possibility would be that North merely wanted to say: Not only the voice actors receive too little attention and recognition, but also other professional groups who work on video games. The entire industry is considered ruthless with countless overtime during the so-called crunch time. The spotlight often falls only on the “lead designers” and executive producers, on the bosses and stars. The countless employees remain in the shadows.

According to Kotaku, North has expressed a favorable opinion towards the “voice actor” strike in the past. So maybe this was not a hidden message, but just one of those humble gestures that you often see when actors accept Oscars. Everyone is thanked, and their own performance is downplayed.
