Farming Strange Coins in Destiny – how is it done these days?
Bungie has been stingy with strange coins lately. The prices at Xur have gone up, the Three of Coins are so appealing and it has become increasingly difficult to earn coins through recent patches. They have throttled the supply. Many are wondering: “How do you farm strange coins in Destiny?”
The short answer is: Just play the game. But there is also a longer one.
The “normal methods” to quickly farm strange coins
Strange coins come from a variety of activities, often as a kind of “consolation prize.” Here are all the “typical” activities that you do for other reasons and where strange coins can drop (but not must).
- The weekly Nightfall strike and completing the weekly Crucible loot both have a chance for Strange Coins – if it’s the main reward, you can get two-digit amounts here
- In reward boxes you receive from reputation gains from factions, from the Cryptarch, Banshee-44, and others, there can be strange coins
- There are up to 3 strange coins after the end of a Crucible match or after completing a strike
- There is a chance for random strange coins after the completion of a Vanguard or Crucible loot
- There is also a chance when decoding blue engrams
In the video, a YouTuber tests how many Strange Coins can be earned in an hour. Two lessons: The Prison of Elders with Treasure Keys is worth it; all other methods are extremely random-dependent
The “special methods” to quickly get strange coins in TTK
Clean out the Prison of Elders again?
The Prison of Elders is currently considered a kind of insider tip to get strange coins. You need Treasure Keys for that, as you should be able to open the big chest in the treasure room. Sometimes there are 3 Strange Coins inside. No matter at what level you tackle the Prison of Elders. The 28 version is therefore recommended. Some suggest to also use the “Three of Coins”.
Question mark missions as a reliable income source?
YouTuber Datto also recommends completing the mysterious Patrol missions in Destiny. They randomly appear when you do normal Patrol missions in an area. These are the ones with question marks, where you have to figure out what the actual task is. According to Datto, these question mark missions are a reliable method to obtain strange coins.
It is clear: Compared to earlier, there is no longer a golden path to obtain strange coins today. Those who want to farm them must either play a lot or specifically pilgrimage back to the Prison of Elders and clean it out. But even this method has downsides: Here, treasure keys must be procured.
