The shotgun is currently the king in the Crucible. Every Guardian who has been in PvP in recent weeks can confirm this. Especially in the Control mode, the shotgun is preferred over other special weapons, as Guardians constantly leap into close combat with knives drawn and the “shoddy” in hand.
In this situation, you have only two options: Either you get yourself a strong shotgun and become a “pumper” yourself, or you engage in combat against the shotgun users.
How to effectively use the shotgun – “If you can’t beat them, join them!”
If you want to embrace the meta, you can keep the following tips in mind when using the shotgun in the Crucible:
- Use grenades to weaken opponents in advance or to lure them out of cover. A startled enemy is easier to take down.
- Don’t rush into combat blindly: Don’t run out in the open towards your enemies, as they can easily gun you down from a distance. Instead:
- Move from cover to cover. Remember that you can be in the sights of a Guardian every time you’re not in cover.
- Don’t hesitate: If you hesitate, you die. If you want to take down a nearby enemy, don’t stop halfway. Either finish the attack, or stay in cover.
- Don’t confuse “hesitation” with “patience”: Patience is your friend. Don’t be too aggressive with the shotgun in hand; think first: “Will I come out of the attack alive?”
- Communicate with your teammates: Discuss when to push. Where are the enemies, where are your own people?
- A good map knowledge: Where are the enemies? Are they in a position where they have the advantage?
- Use abilities like Shadowstep and armor pieces like Dämmerbruch-Garnison to make unpredictable movements.
How to fight against shotgun users – “Better dead than shotgun!”
If there are many shotgun users on the enemy team, consider these tips:
- Choose the right weapon: Use automatic rifles or pulse rifles with high rates of fire, such as “The Clever Dragon“, to keep shotgun users at bay. At close range, you can still hold them off with fusion rifles or hand cannons.
- Avoid the spots where the “pump users” like to lurk. Good map knowledge is important here.
- If you spot a shotgun enemy’s position, communicate this to your team. Don’t run into the trap alone, but wait for backup.
- If you’re using a sniper, you can provide cover for your teammates while they push. This way, you can stop shotgun users from a distance.
However, the best tip is: Use a shotgun yourself and become familiar with the weapon class. This way, you can find out how you are defeated by enemies, what the weaknesses are, and apply this to your own playstyle.
